Strašov – Water Landscape, Village Culture and Local Traditions

Strašov combines a distinctive water landscape with village history and vibrant local traditions. The Strašovský rybník is at its heart, but the village green and the edges of the settlement also tell the story of the village’s development. For families wishing to combine nature observation, small cultural discoveries and selected events, Strašov offers various points of interest to consider when planning a trip.

Natural surroundings of Strašovský rybník

Strašovský rybník is an area containing specially protected plant and animal species of national importance. It is also described as a significant landscape element (VKP). The pond is fed by the Strašovský potok stream. Its banks are lined with reed beds, beyond which lie wet and marshy meadows. In the middle of Strašovský rybník lies an island formed from sediments.

This combination makes the pond a landscape area with several clearly distinguishable elements: the open water surface, reeds, wet meadows and the centrally located island each form part of its appearance. Rare plant species have been found in the surrounding area, including species from the Red List of Threatened Species. Those travelling with children can use these differences as an opportunity to observe the surroundings attentively and without haste, rather than viewing the site merely as a single attraction.

In addition to Strašovský rybník, extensive water surfaces on the village green shape the appearance of the settlement.

Village history and visible signs

Strašov was first mentioned in writing in 1337. A specific historical detail can be found on the village green: beside a small bell tower stands a stone cross with a relief of the Virgin Mary dating from 1881. There is also a wooden cross on the northern edge of the village. Together, these features reveal different layers of the village’s history without reducing Strašov to a single building.

The Strašovská stezka is a recurring local hiking event. An anniversary edition has been announced for 12 September 2026. The traditional bonfire known as “Pálení čarodějnic” was also announced for 30 April 2025 and again for 2026. The relevant year is therefore decisive when planning dates.

In addition, the 9th Gulášiáda took place on 6 July 2024 in the cultural area of the municipality of Strašov. The local product “Strašovský česnek” is associated with the Strašovský Paličák z.s. association in Strašov.

Strašov is located along several Class III roads. Road III/32710 connects Semín and Strašov. Road III/32722 runs from Levín via Pamětník, Újezd u Přelouče and Strašov to Břehy. Road III/32727 connects Chýšť, Vápno and Strašov. Class III road III/32725 also runs through the municipality between Strašov and Přepychy.
