Discover Kostěnice: Chapel, Ponds and History

Kostěnice combines religious tradition, memorial sites and a local fishing culture to create a destination with several distinct facets. Here, you can combine visits to historical sites with a visit to the two ponds. The Roman Catholic chapel, the two memorial sites and the ponds each offer a different focus.

Railway Station and Transport

Kostěnice railway station is located on line 010 between Kolín and Česká Třebová. It is also integrated into the integrated transport system. The station building is accessible without barriers. This information expressly refers to the building and does not automatically apply to all sections of an entire journey. The location along the line, integration into the transport system and accessibility of the building are three separate details: they concern the rail connection, the transport system and the station building. Kostěnice railway station is therefore located on the section of line 010 between Kolín and Česká Třebová.

Chapel and Pilgrimage

A central cultural landmark of the village is the Roman Catholic Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, which is dedicated to the Visitation of Mary. It was consecrated on 3 October 1909. Since this consecration, the local pilgrimage has been celebrated in Kostěnice on the first Sunday in July. The chapel and the pilgrimage thus connect a precisely dated event with an annually recurring date. The pilgrimage is tied to the first Sunday in July, not to a single calendar date. The consecration marks the chapel’s historical date, while the first Sunday in July marks the recurring pilgrimage date in the annual calendar. The history of the village also includes two independent memorial sites. A monument to the victims of the First World War commemorates 24 war dead from the years 1914 to 1918. Nearby is a war grave in the form of a cenotaph for Karel Valter. It commemorates the fact that he fell at Berje in the Littoral (Přímoří) on 28 May 1917. A cenotaph is a memorial grave in which the deceased’s body is not located at the site. The monument focuses on the 24 war dead and the years 1914 to 1918. The cenotaph focuses on Karel Valter, 28 May 1917 and Berje in the Littoral (Přímoří); his body is not located there.

Fishing at the Local Ponds

The two local ponds are also part of the village landscape. Fishing is possible at two local ponds in Kostěnice: the upper pond and the lower pond. For this, you need a municipal permit issued by the municipal administration. Fishing competitions for children and adults are held every year at the lower pond. Both ponds therefore offer fishing opportunities, while the annual competitions take place at the lower pond and are open to both children and adults.
