Church, Museum and Historic Traces

A prominent cultural landmark is the stone church Kostel sv. Martina. It was built in the Baroque style from 1736 to 1739 according to plans by court architect Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. Several details from different periods have been preserved inside: these include the original Martin bell from 1499, a high altar with a painting of Saint Martin, and stone and pewter baptismal fonts from the 16th century.

The Africké Muzeum Dr. Emila Holuba dedicates its exhibition primarily to the life, expeditions and work of Dr. Emil Holub and his wife Růžena Holubová. The museum also presents collections and the significant ethnographic work of Dr. Emil Holub. This gives it a distinct focus within the town: the center is not just a single event, but a scientific and personal life story.

West of Kostel sv. Martina lies the former Holice fortress grounds, with the remains of a fortress from the mid-14th century. At the southwestern and northwestern corners, square platforms with clearly recognizable corner bastions approximately 13 meters in diameter have been preserved. Remains of the moat are also visible on the western side. Another architecturally significant building is Sokolovna, designed according to the designs and plans of architect Otakar Novotný. The cornerstone was laid in August 1912, and the ceremonial opening took place at the Sokol district festival in August 1913. Today, the building is used exclusively for sports by local schools and clubs.

An Easy Route Through History and the City Park

The Od Holuba k Malichovi route is 4.3 km long and takes approximately 90 minutes. It ends near the starting point at the Základní umělecká škola Karla Malicha. The route passes through easy terrain and is suitable for visitors of all ages, pedestrians and wheelchair users. This means the route can also be included in your daily itinerary when keeping the distance manageable is a priority.

In terms of content, the Od Holuba k Malichovi educational trail combines architecture and history with the flora and fauna of the city park as well as contemporary art. The fighting during the May Uprising is also addressed. The route Po stopách holického povstání offers another historical perspective. It leads to interesting places connected with the Holice uprising at the end of the Second World War.

The Městský park on Smetanova Street is also part of the town's character. Its creation was initiated on March 26, 1883, after František Holub senior presented the proposal at the general meeting of the Citizens' Fund. For this purpose, 873 guilders were allocated. The area on the outskirts of the town was subsequently transformed into a picturesque, park-like natural space.

The Motokrosová trať Michaela Špačka provides a clear contrast to the cultural and historic offerings. The natural track in Holice is 1,955 meters long and has a minimum width of 6 meters. Training on the track is arranged by telephone.
