Rokytno: Sand Dunes, Geotourism and Model Cars

Rokytno is characterized by three distinct themes: the Přesypy u Rokytna nature reserve with its sand dunes, an exhibition of model cars in the village, and the “Z Pardubic regionem Kunětické hory” cycling tour, which begins in the courtyard of Pardubice Castle. Sand dunes, earth history, cycling and model vehicles represent different ways of exploring Rokytno.

The Sand Dunes of Přesypy u Rokytna

The most striking landscape feature is the Přesypy u Rokytna nature reserve. It protects undisturbed sand dunes with remnants of psammophilous vegetation and fauna. The protection therefore applies not only to the sandy landform, but also to the plant and animal populations preserved there. The term “psammophilous” refers to plants and animals that are associated with sandy habitats. Sand, vegetation and fauna thus form interconnected components of a special habitat here. The undisturbed landform is combined with the preserved habitat of vegetation and fauna.

Přesypy u Rokytna is one of the best-preserved groups of sand dunes in the eastern Polabí region. Their formation dates from the Late Pleistocene to the Holocene. The Pleistocene and Holocene are successive epochs in the history of the Earth. This chronological classification adds a geological dimension to the view of the dunes: they are not only a striking landscape form, but also represent a much older process of landscape development. As a geotourism attraction, Přesypy u Rokytna combines the preserved sand dunes with their geological context. The area can therefore be viewed both through the visible sand formations and through their origins. The preserved vegetation and fauna complement the geological perspective with the ecological aspect of the protected area.

Cycling from a Fixed Starting Point

Cycling is also associated with a specific tour. The “Z Pardubic regionem Kunětické hory” cycling tour begins in the courtyard of Pardubice Castle. Its starting point is therefore at a castle site in Pardubice, while the Přesypy u Rokytna nature reserve is characterized by sand dunes and psammophilous communities. This makes the focus on cycling clearly distinct from the nature-related theme of the protected area. The tour and the dune landscape represent two different ways of exploring the region: one is a cycling tour starting from a castle, while the other is a geotourism attraction with geological and ecological significance.

Model Cars as a Distinctive Attraction

Rokytno also has an exhibition of model cars. It introduces a clearly different theme from that of the nature reserve. While the focus at Přesypy u Rokytna is on sand dunes, vegetation, fauna and earth history, the exhibition is devoted to vehicle models. It therefore complements the natural and geological themes with an independent exhibition subject. The two focal points are clearly distinct: one concerns a protected habitat and its development, while the other concerns the presentation of model cars.
