Svojšice Fortress and its eventful history

The imposing Gothic Svojšice Fortress was founded in 1365 by Mikšík ze Svojšic. The year 1634 marked a major turning point: the army of Emperor Ferdinand II burned the fortress down. It was subsequently uninhabited and gradually fell into disrepair; it was already being described as a ruin in 1706. This chronology makes the site particularly interesting for visitors who want to understand not only a surviving structure but also the traces of a long period of decline.

The protected area of the former fortress includes the remains of the palace, a fragment of the tower, cellars and the enclosed plots of the site. The surviving parts thus represent various elements of the former complex, without the historical description implying the existence of a present-day museum or interior area. The ruins are also set within a landscape whose wooded character clearly distinguishes this historic site from a purely urban cultural destination.

Julie Havlíčková and a local memorial site

Svojšice is also associated with Julie Havlíčková, the wife of Karel Havlíček Borovský. She was born in Svojšice in 1826 as Julie Sýkorová. A commemorative plaque is located on her birth house; the building is now the municipal office No. 1. Anyone interested in notable figures and local history will find here a second way to explore Svojšice’s past, extending beyond the fortress ruins.

Hiking and cycling with different route profiles

A red-marked hiking trail leads to the Gothic ruins of Svojšice Fortress and continues to Horní Raškovice. The fortress is therefore described not only as a historic site but also as part of a specific hiking route. Cycle Route 4128 passes through Svojšice and forms part of a 27.5 km circular route from Heřmanův Městec to Choltice. When planning your day, you can therefore choose between a trail to the ruins and a longer cycling loop through several towns and villages.

Cultural venue and Svojšický Podzim

The Svojšice cultural venue has a capacity of approximately 10,000 people. The 12 September 2026 edition of Svojšický Podzim offers a particular point of reference: refreshments will be available at the event venue, and camping at the festival site will also be free of charge.
