Chvaletice at the end of the Železné hory ridge

Chvaletice lies in the northwestern foothills of the Železné hory National Geopark. Here, the Železné hory ridge comes to an end, while beyond the Elbe stretches the Východočeská tabule. The Elbe forms the spatial reference line between the diminishing mountain ridge and the plateau beyond; the change in landscape can therefore already be understood from the town’s location. This geological transitional position gives the town a clear identity of its own: the local rocks tell of two seas of different ages, volcanic activity, mountain-building processes such as folding, and a significant accumulation of ores.

Visitors to Chvaletice can learn about this history both from the landscape and from explanatory stations. However, access to the Chvaletice geological site is possible only with special permission. It includes a military area, a quarry and private properties. For travel planning, this means making an important distinction: the geological feature is a defining theme of the town, but direct access to its area is not freely possible.

Cycle routes, viewpoints and walks along the Elbe

For cyclists, Chvaletice offers several documented points of interest. MAGEO is a 29 km-long geological cycle route with 13 information boards. Its stations include the Chvaletická vyhlídka viewpoint and Chvaletice railway station. Another cycle route reaches Chvaletice via an underpass at the railway station and continues from there along the river to Týnec nad Labem. The two cycle-route connections are clearly different: MAGEO organises the route around geology, while the other route follows the river to Týnec nad Labem.

The Chvaletická vyhlídka viewpoint offers a sweeping view across the landscape. In good visibility, you can also clearly see Sněžka. At the western edge of old Chvaletice, in Hornická čtvrť, two information boards stand along the road from Chvaletice to Horušice. From there, the view extends far across the described geological site. In addition, walks along the banks of the Elbe are possible in Chvaletice. This allows the cycle route, viewpoint and river landscape to be combined as different ways of discovering the town, without entering the geological site itself.

Hornická Čtvrť: Local History and Cultural Monuments

The history of Chvaletice is closely linked to mining. Large parts of the original settlement were destroyed by mining; Hornická Čtvrť was built for the miners. The historic district preserves several distinctive memorials and architectural landmarks. The Neo-Renaissance Protestant church in Hornická Čtvrť was built and consecrated in 1882 and is protected as a cultural monument.

The former Masaryk Primary School is also part of the district’s history. It was completed in 1930 to a design by the architect Řepa and is protected as an immovable cultural monument. A Jan Hus monument stands on a meadow below the Protestant church. It commemorates the 500th anniversary of the execution of Jan Hus. Its location below the church places the monument spatially within the historic district. In addition to landscape and geological themes, Hornická Čtvrť thus offers an independent way to engage with the town’s history.
