Kamenický Šenov

Kamenický Šenov combines an almost three-hundred-year tradition of uninterrupted crystal chandelier production with a distinctive basalt landscape and historic railway lines. The town therefore offers different ways to experience a stay: glass history in the museum, short themed trails, a geological attraction and excursions along former or historic railway routes.

Glass History and Historic Sites

The permanent exhibition at the Sklářské muzeum Kamenický Šenov traces the development of engraved and cut glass from the 17th century to the present day. The exhibits include historicist crystal chandeliers with pendants and layered lighting fixtures. The tradition of producing this type of lighting dates back to 1724 in the region. Visitors interested in craftsmanship, design and the development of regional products gain a broad overview spanning several centuries here, rather than seeing only individual objects.

The town’s history can also be encountered outside the museum at notable buildings. The Baroque Church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, Narození sv. Jana Křtitele, dates from 1718. The restored Old Cemetery preserves Rococo and Neoclassical tombstones from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Both sites complement the history of glassmaking with evidence of the town’s older architectural and cultural heritage.

Panská skála and Trails in the Landscape

Panská skála is a geological formation created by volcanic activity and a typical example of the columnar fracturing of basalt. An information centre, a car park and refreshments are available at Panská skála. This makes the rock formation a clear landmark for excursions as well. The “In the Footsteps of the Railway” circular trail begins and ends at the car park by Panská skála.

For a shorter exploration focused on the town, the Sklářská stezka is available. The two-kilometre route leads to important sites and monuments in Kamenický Šenov associated with the history of glassmaking. It therefore brings together several aspects of the town in a manageable format.

Cycle Path and Historic Railway

The Cyklostezka Varhany is a nearly 17-kilometre-long route separated from motor traffic for pedestrians and cyclists. It follows the former railway line from Česká Lípa to Kamenický Šenov. The historic route of the line remains a distinct part of the experience: today, the route is described as a path for active travel, not as a railway connection that is still in operation.

Another type of excursion is offered by the “In the Footsteps of the Railway” circular trail, with the option of travelling through the landscape by historic train to Česká Kamenice and back. In addition, a 4.5-kilometre museum railway dating from 1886 runs along the line below Zámecký vrch into the glassmaking town of Kamenický Šenov. Following necessary repairs, seasonal museum operations with historic steam and motor trains were launched. This provides different historic railway experiences for planning a trip: a circular trail with a train ride, a museum railway service and a route separated from motor traffic along a former railway line.

A Place for Different Ideas for a Day Out

Those choosing accommodation in Kamenický Šenov can tailor their stay to different interests. Culture enthusiasts will find specific themes in the museum and at the historic buildings; outdoors, the Sklářská stezka, the circular trail near Panská skála and the Cyklostezka Varhany lead through the surrounding area in different lengths and formats. For families with varied interests, this change between an exhibition, a short local route, the landscape and railway history provides a practical basis for planning the day, without all activities having to follow the same format.
