Tannwald: Hiking, Views and Culture

Tannwald can be discovered from several different perspectives: distinctive viewpoints, hikes with clearly described routes, cycling trails on the mountain and historic sites. This allows you to plan your days around landscapes, physical activity or culture, without the individual experiences offering the same thing.

Viewpoints on Tanvaldský Špičák

The Tanvaldský Špičák observation tower is an 18-metre-high stone tower dating from 1909. From there, the panoramic view extends across the Jizera Mountains and the Czech and Polish parts of the Krkonoše Mountains. The tower thus combines a specific historic structure with an expansive view across two mountain regions.

Another distinctive site is the Fanterova skála rock viewpoint on Tanvaldský Špičák. It was opened to visitors in 1889. Those interested in the history of viewpoints will find here, alongside the stone tower built later, a second, independent point of reference on the mountain.

Hikes with Different Routes

The “Za jizerskohorským duchem Muhu” hike begins in Tanvald and leads via Terezínka and Černá Studnice. Its route therefore identifies both the starting point and two distinctive stops that provide spatial orientation along the tour.

The “Kolem Tanvaldu” hike follows a circular route from the stop in Tanvald via the Špičák saddle, Desná, Světlá, Šulíkova skála and Svárov, returning to the Tanvald stop. For your planning, the distinction between a route starting in Tanvald and a circular route returning to the same stop is particularly useful.

Terezínka on the Slope of Muchov

Terezínka is a masonry viewpoint with stairs on the slope of Mount Muchov. In 1853, Johann Mayer had the 15-metre-high rock of Terezínka fitted with a masonry viewpoint and a railing. From Tanvald, Terezínka is easily accessible via a red-marked hiking trail.

The “Kolem Terezínky” excursion also has its own focus. It leads to places offering views of Tanvald, the Jizera Mountains and the Bohemian Paradise. It therefore complements the viewpoints focused on Tanvaldský Špičák with additional views of the town and landscape.

Cycling and Railway Heritage

For cycling, the Tanvaldský Špičák Bikepark offers approximately 12 kilometres of single-track, unpaved terrain trails. The trails lead from the mountain summit to the valley station of the cable car. The approximate length and the route described provide clear initial guidance if you are considering cycling as a focus in its own right.

Another historic feature is the Tanvald–Kořenov–Harrachov cog railway line. It has been in operation since 1902 and is considered the steepest railway in the Czech Republic.

Culture in the Šumburk District

The Church of St Francis of Assisi in the Šumburk district of Tanvald is a protected cultural monument. The foundation stone was laid in 1899, and the ceremonial consecration took place on 15 August 1901.
