Discover Friedstein: Castle, Landscape and Trails

Friedstein is a destination for anyone who wants to combine history and landscape while travelling through the Czech Republic. The main attractions are Frýdštejn Castle, historic chapels and a section of the Zlatá stezka. Frýdštejn Castle: History with a distinctive tower

The best-preserved part of Frýdštejn Castle is a cylindrical tower that is 15 metres high and 9 metres wide. Its clear shape makes it a particularly memorable detail of the complex. The castle was probably founded by the Bibrštejn family in the second half of the 14th century. In the 1990s, it was opened to the public after the surviving masonry had been reinforced. This makes it possible to trace the history of the site not only through its date of foundation, but also through the way its surviving structures have been treated.

Chapels and sacred traces

Below the castle stands a simple sandstone chapel dating from 1823. It was built in the vernacular Baroque style and complements the medieval castle with a much younger, regionally distinctive structure. The chapel “Kaple Krista Trpitele” was added to the list of cultural monuments on 3 May 1958. It currently contains votive paintings, a statue of the infant Jesus on the altar and a replica of the statue of the Suffering Christ. Visitors who look beyond grand buildings during their stay to smaller examples of religious and local history will find different historical layers in one destination.

Trails through Landscape and History

The tower of Frýdštejn Castle offers a view of the picturesque surrounding landscape of the Maloskalsko area. The history of the routes is also part of Friedstein’s character: the former smithy stands at a strategic crossroads of the old carters’ road and the Saxon road. Its historical status is explicitly part of its significance. A 12-kilometre section of the Zlatá stezka is also of interest when planning a longer excursion. It leads from Turnov via Drábovna and Frýdštejn Castle to Malá Skála.

Mountains and Destinations in the Wider Area

The mountains Maršovicky vrch, Černá Studnice and Pustina lie in the area around Friedstein. Valdštejn Church is also nearby. Further afield in the region are Ještěd Mountain and the Kaple Nejsvětější Trojice Church. These geographical connections offer various ways to combine the castle and cultural history with a broader appreciation of the landscape, without presenting the individual destinations as a single attraction.
