Louschnitz: Views, Culture and the Tradition of Glass Beads

Louschnitz combines experiences in the landscape with an unusually vivid local history. Viewpoints, a stream running through the valley, a historic mill, sacred buildings and the memory of glass bead production are found here as different facets of a stay. Anyone looking for accommodation in Louschnitz for their trip will therefore find a place whose character cannot be reduced to a single attraction.

Loužnické lavičky and the Landscape Along the Stream

The Loužnické lavičky are a particular highlight. They are maintained as places to rest, for excursions and for beautiful views of the landscape. The overview lists eight locations: U Modřínu, U Posrané hrobky, U Zvoničky, U Chaty, U Velkého vršku, U Albíny, Na koupališti and Na Vyhlídce. This provides a selection of different places to visit when planning a day, without all the experiences having to be of the same character.

The Kopaňský potok flows through the valley of Loužnice along its entire length and divides the municipality into two parts. State Road No. 10/E65 from Prague to Harrachov also runs along this stream. The firewater reservoir of Loužnice is fed by the Plchovský potok, which flows through a protected area. During the summer months, it is possible to swim in the firewater reservoir at your own risk. Thus, alongside the viewpoints, Louschnitz also offers a waterside location and a connection to the surrounding landscape, with swimming explicitly subject to the warning that it is at your own risk.

Mill, Bell Tower and Sacred Traces

At the northern edge of Loužnice stands Mill No. 1 on the Kopaňský potok, a left-bank tributary of the Žernovník. The route of the millrace and its banks are clearly visible in the terrain. The local sacred history also includes a small sacred complex, regarded as the municipality's only sacred building.

The bell tower of Loužnice was rebuilt and renovated. On September 28, 2014, it was consecrated together with a statue of Saint Wenceslas carved from the fallen linden tree. The specific date and the connection with the carved statue give this part of the local history a clear point of reference. Those interested in regional culture will therefore encounter both architectural traces and a more recent form of remembrance here.

Glass Beads and the Sokolovna Cultural Center

Loužnice also has a history of glassmaking. In 1894, there were several businesses producing costume jewelry; among them was the Link family factory, where glass rods were processed into beads. Shortly before the First World War, bead pressing in furnaces was introduced in Loužnice. There was also a glass ring grinding workshop in Kopani, where the rings were locally known as Bengle. The Loužnický Betlém has been made by Bedřich Rathouský since 2017. Taken together, these references tell of various forms of local craftsmanship while also preserving distinctive terms from the region.

The Sokolovna Cultural Center, which has existed since 1963, represents cultural life today. Its rooms are suitable for cultural events, dances, discos, theater and film screenings, lectures, exhibitions, sporting events and gymnastics classes. The municipal library is also regularly located in the Sokolovna Cultural Center in Loužnice. In this way, a public cultural venue complements the historical themes with a space intended for many different types of events.

Louschnitz is therefore suitable as a starting point for a journey in which the landscape, water, local history and culture do not have to be considered separately. Depending on your interests, the Loužnické lavičky and the views, the traces of the mill, the sacred monuments or the history of glass beads can form the focus. For further travel planning, you can also visit Dessendorf, Skuchrow, Eisenbrod, Žďár, Georgenthal, Gablonz An Der Neiße, Jilau and Wlastiborsch.
