Eger: Castle, Museums and Trails along the Ohře

Eger combines history, art and riverside landscapes into a diverse travel destination. Cheb Castle, the merchant houses of Špalíček, churches and museums form the cultural focus; along the Ohře, there are also trails, a cycle route and natural areas. Historical traces in Eger

The Cheb Museum is one of the oldest regional museums in Bohemia and opened on 15 May 1874. It is located in Pachelbel House, where Albrecht von Wallenstein was murdered on 25 February 1634. The partly half-timbered merchant houses of Špalíček provide another focal point. They were built from the 13th century onwards, are part of Cheb's urban heritage reserve and are listed among the immovable cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. Pachelbel House thus brings together the history of the museum and a specific site in the city's history.

Castle, chapel and oldest church

Cheb Castle is the only representative of this type of castle architecture in the Czech Republic. It has a two-storey Romanesque-Gothic chapel dedicated to Saint Erhard and Saint Ursula. The Church of Saint Nicholas and Saint Elizabeth is Cheb's oldest church and is open to the general public.

Art from several centuries

The Cheb Gallery of Fine Arts is an art museum focusing on 19th- and 20th-century art as well as Gothic art from the historic Cheb region. GAVU Cheb also presents a permanent exhibition of 19th- and 20th-century Czech art as well as an exhibition of Gothic sculpture. The cultural spectrum thus ranges from medieval works to Czech art of the more recent past.

The Ohře, Krajinka and Goethův naučný lesopark

Krajinka is a tourist, leisure and sports area on both banks of the Ohře below Cheb Castle and includes a cycle route. The Goethův naučný lesopark is located on the left bank of the Ohře in the direction of Františkovy Lázně. It has well-maintained trails, a maze and a suspension bridge. Several information boards provide details about the area's history, the animals living there and geological features. Trails through the Goethův naučný lesopark lead to the Egerwarte viewpoint, also known as Chebská stráž. Krajinka and the Goethův naučný lesopark offer different focuses along the Ohře: leisure and sports on the one hand, and information about nature and views on the other.

Cycle route and festival

The second section of the Ohře Cycle Route begins in Cheb and leads through picturesque countryside near the river via Kynšperk nad Ohří and Sokolov. For your travel planning, this creates a clear distinction between a stay focused on the castle, churches and museums and one with a stronger focus on landscapes or cycling. The route via Kynšperk nad Ohří and Sokolov extends the riverside landscape around Cheb with further sections near the Ohře.
