Hřebečná can be explored through an exceptionally rich mining history. Adit tunnels, open-pit mining remnants, a terrain depression created by mining, and a historic water system reveal how closely the development of the place is connected with tin. This creates a journey for you between an underground tour, visible traces in the landscape, and cultural and historical features.

Four Centuries of Tin Mining

The Hřebečná mining district documents 400 years of tin mining from the 16th to the 20th century. The mining landscape of Hřebečná preserves characteristic remnants of open-pit and underground tin mining. The Důl Mauritius mine plays a central role: It was the largest tin mine in the Czech part of the Ore Mountains and was declared a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic in 2014. Tin from Hřebečná was exported to almost all of Europe via the markets in Nuremberg.

Underground in the Kryštof Adit

During the tour of the Kryštof adit, you descend 12 meters in elevation into the adit. The tour lasts about an hour and covers a 400-meter route. Helmets, lamps, boots, and coats are lent to visitors for the tour. This gives you concrete insights into an underground working world, without the historical traces being limited to mere exhibits.

Schneppova Pinka: Mining as a Landscape Form

Schneppova pinka is a terrain depression about 80 meters long, up to 20 meters wide, and up to 20 meters deep. It was created by open-pit and underground mining, followed by the collapse of mine workings, as early as before 1730. In the upper Schneppova pinka, the course of a greisen vein and part of the old Tagstrecke adit, constructed in the second half of the 16th century, can be traced. Here, mining history is visible not only underground but also in the shape of the terrain.

Water Management and Volcanic Rocks

The Hřebečná mining water system was established from the 16th century onward across an area of 3.5 km². It comprises intake and drainage ditches with a total length of more than 10 km. A geological contrast is provided by the basalt quarry between Ryžovna and Hřebečná. There, extraction exposes columnar jointing in volcanic rocks that formed as a lava flow cooled.

Historical Traces of Tin Mining

The adit Bílá holubice (White Dove) is also part of the historical landscape. It is one of the oldest adits of the Zadní Hřebečná tin deposit and was probably driven at the beginning of the second half of the 16th century. The mining history thus extends from the approximately one-hour, 400-meter tour to an adit that was probably driven at the beginning of the second half of the 16th century. The places described offer different ways to experience the region: The Kryštof adit represents the underground tour, Schneppova pinka and the water system show the visible consequences of mining, while Důl Mauritius and the older adits illustrate the historical development of the tin district.
