Discover Podbřezí

Podbřezí between Skalka, Zlatý potok and woodland nature

Podbřezí offers a setting where cultural history, paths through the landscape and local events stand side by side. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether the historical sites, a walk along Zlatý potok or a scheduled event are the main priorities for your trip. The distinctive features of the area are particularly evident around Skalka and in the Skalecký háj nature reserve.

Skalka Castle and the Jewish cemetery

Skalka State Castle is a registered immovable cultural monument in the cadastral area of Podbřezí. Its history at the present site goes back a long way: a fortress with farm buildings has been documented there since the early 14th century. Those interested in the historical development of the area will therefore find not only a single historic building, but also a site with medieval origins.

The Zlatý potok educational trail introduces visitors to the most important historical monuments of the municipality of Podbřezí, Skalka Castle and the Jewish forest cemetery. The Jewish cemetery near Skalka was established at the end of the 17th century and contains 92 gravestones. Visitors can reach the cemetery via a footpath along Zlatý potok; it is also freely accessible. This makes it possible to combine the historical focus with a route through the landscape, rather than viewing the individual destinations merely as isolated sights.

Skalecký háj as a natural experience

During a walk along Zlatý potok in Podbřezí, you can visit the Skalecký háj nature reserve. It consists of a preserved mixed oak-hornbeam forest with a diverse community of protected species. Particularly noteworthy are the protected Turk's cap lily and spotted arum, each of which grows there in stands numbering many hundreds of plants. This creates a clear contrast in your daily itinerary to Skalka's cultural and historical focus: on one side are the castle, cemetery and monuments; on the other, a protected forest with striking plant populations.

Events with a local character

The SK Skalka events calendar is also part of the local character. Every year in June, the club holds an outdoor disco and rock event at the sports field, featuring unusual competitions for visitors. In addition, there are more than ten events with fixed dates each year, mostly sports tournaments for adults and children. These dates complement the quieter cultural and natural experiences with community events that have an explicitly sporting focus.

Rock performances by SK Skalka traditionally take place in spring. They are attended by people from Podbřezí as well as from surrounding villages and towns. Before Easter, the club also holds the schnapps tasting “O„skalecké štamrple“, at which locals taste and assess samples from their neighbors. If you would like to plan your trip around a local event, these different formats provide a distinct addition to the castle, cemetery and nature reserve.
