Nebužely – Churches, Sandstone Landscape and Cycle Paths

Nebužely combines cultural and historical heritage in the village with the distinctive sandstone landscape of the Kokořínský důl Nature Reserve. Sandstone Landscape in Kokořínský důl

The Kokořínský důl Nature Reserve lists Nebužely as one of its cadastral areas. It comprises a strongly geomorphologically structured sandstone complex with predominantly forested habitats, canyon-like valleys, rock terraces and smaller rock towns. Weathering formations include the Pokličky and other formations created by the weathering of iron-bearing sandstone. The combination of forest, rock and deeply incised valleys defines the character of the area. When planning a day in nature, you will therefore encounter a variety of landscapes, while the Pokličky stand out as a distinctive weathering formation within the sandstone setting.

Churches and Historical Heritage

The Evangelical Church in Nebužely is an 18th-century church building and was originally the Toleration prayer house of a Reformed or Helvetic religious congregation. It was completed in 1786; the tower was added in 1864. Its building history thus combines the original sacred structure with a later addition. Today, the church serves as a depot of the Mělník District Museum.

A second ecclesiastical landmark is the Catholic Church: a single-nave Baroque rural church building with an irregular cruciform floor plan. Inside is a notable marble memorial stone for Anna Hrušková from Březno. A statue of Saint Jasna Nepomuského was erected in front of the church in 1884. Monumental, representative historic farmhouses in Nebužely are called „selskými paláci“ (“farmers’ palaces”) because of their elaborate design. Their floor plan and furnishings create a different accent from the Evangelical church. Thus, in the village you will encounter two different examples of ecclesiastical history, complemented by the statue in front of the church.

Cycling and Navigation

Cycle Path 8170 runs from Kroužek via Nebužely and Řepín to Řepínský Důl. It is described as a moderately difficult route on a paved road and is suitable for all types of bicycles. The nearest red-marked hiking trail and Cycle Path 142 are about 2.5 km from Nebužely in the direction of Kokořín. The former Kroužek water mill lies directly on this red-marked hiking trail and Cycle Path 142. It probably originated in the 16th century and was converted around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries into a brick building with a Francis turbine. Those travelling with different types of bicycles can take the paved route of Cycle Path 8170 into account regardless of bicycle type. The mill thus combines a historic sight with the routes described around Kokořín.

Transport Links and Further Research

Nebužely has a railway halt and a freight loading yard. The municipality lies on railway line 076 between Mladá Boleslav, Mšeno and Mělník. This transport aspect adds another facet to the local history.
