Kokořín – Castle, Baroque Château and Sandstone Landscape

Kokořín is a destination where the castle, Baroque château and sandstone landscape reveal different facets of one place. The protected Hrad Kokořín complex represents a multifaceted cultural experience, while the Kokořínský důl Nature Reserve forms a distinct landscape world with ravine valleys, rock formations and wetlands.

Hrad Kokořín: Castle Complex and Self-Guided Tour

The protected Hrad Kokořín complex comprises the Old and New Palaces, the main tower, the stair tower, a stair terrace with a rock chamber on the northern side of the castle courtyard, the perimeter wall, a well located outside the actual castle, a stable carved into the rock, a bridge and the outer bailey. The complex can therefore be explored not only through a single tower, but through several structural parts of the castle.

Hrad Kokořín can be reached by car from three directions. You can leave your vehicle in the last car park below the castle and then walk less than one kilometre uphill to the castle. The second tour at Hrad Kokořín is self-guided. It includes climbing the 37.5-metre-high defensive tower, with views of the surrounding landscape, as well as visiting a historical exhibition in the cellar.

Sandstone, Valleys and Wetlands

The Kokořínský důl Nature Reserve also includes the cadastral area of Kokořín. Its sandstone terrain includes ravine valleys, rock terraces, smaller rock cities and weathering formations, including the Pokličky. Extensive wetlands also shape the area: these include springs, bodies of water, the Pšovka and its tributaries, reed beds, sedge marshes, wet meadows, and alder and ash-alder floodplain forests.

In the nearby area are the Kokořínské Pokličky, located at the confluence of Kokořínský Důl and Vojtěšský Důl. The sandstone formations shaped by erosion reach heights of up to 12 metres. The path leading to them is accessible to people of all ages, providing a practical opportunity to explore the landscape together.

Baroque Kokořín in the Village Centre

Zámek Kokořín stands in the centre of the municipality of Kokořín. It is a Baroque château from the mid-18th century with farm buildings. The two-storey building has a red façade, corner towers and an onion dome; the Sweerts-Špork family had it built as a country residence.

Zámek Kokořín is not open to the public. Nevertheless, it remains a prominent landmark of the village square and an interesting destination when exploring the Kokořín Valley. On the village square in front of the château there is also a Baroque sculptural group of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino dating from 1700.
