Dolní Zimoř – Nature, Trails and Kokořínsko

Dolní Zimoř combines protected nature, distinctive landscapes and trails for a variety of excursions. Landscape between valleys, sandstone and protected areas

Dolní Zimoř lies in a narrow valley of the Želízská svodnice stream. In landscape terms, the municipality belongs to the Kokořínsko area and the Kokořín and Mšeno landscape region. Characteristic features include gorge-like valleys, sandstone rocks weathered to varying degrees, wooded slopes and meadows on the valley floors. As a result, the landscape does not have a uniform appearance, but alternates between narrow valley sections, open meadows and rocky areas.

On the northern side of the Zimořský důl valley, a rocky section is protected as the Želízky natural monument. At the rock edges, the protected area preserves a warm-favored habitat with rare and endangered plant and animal communities. These include the leafy iris (Iris aphylla) and the pasque flower (Pulsatilla pratensis). The Zimořský důl valley and the adjacent slopes also belong to particularly valuable areas within the Natura 2000 network and to the Kokořínsko biotope.

What to bear in mind when visiting

The Želízky natural monument is not an area that can simply be reached from a road. Access leads through trackless terrain; the site is more than 250 metres from the road. This specific access situation distinguishes the protected rocky area from the trails used for walks in the surrounding area. For short walks near Dolní Zimoř, the trail in the Zimořský důl valley is used in particular.

The history of the village is also reflected in more than just the landscape. Some buildings in Dolní Zimoř have retained their original, distinctive character, particularly in Horní Zimoř and south of the road to Želízy. Events held by the municipality in Dolní Zimoř also include a summer gathering at the sports field. In this way, the natural environment, village character and local community life complement one another, without reducing the village to a single attraction.

Hiking and cycling around Dolní Zimoř

Several documented trail connections are available when choosing an excursion. A hiking trail to Sitné and Vidim branches off from the shared hiking and cycling route between Želízy and Kokořín. In addition, a cycle path to Vysoká leads from this shared route. Those travelling on foot can therefore choose between short walks in the Zimořský důl valley and longer connections into the surrounding area. For a cycling trip, the branch to Vysoká offers a separate direction, while the hiking trail to Sitné and Vidim provides a different continuation.

Getting around the village

Dolní Zimoř lies away from the main traffic routes. Only three Class III roads pass through the municipal area. Approximately eight visitor parking spaces are located in front of the municipal office. This number is approximate and does not describe any additional parking facilities. A pavement runs along the road to Želízy. The path between Dolní Zimoř and Horní Zimoř is considered suitable and largely barrier-free.
