Luštěnice: History, Culture and Places to Visit

Luštěnice combines an unusually multifaceted history with family-friendly leisure activities and a landscape suitable for recreational cycling. Between the church, château, former broadcasting station, playgrounds and model car racing, you will find various reasons to discover this Czech town in greater depth.

History Surrounding the Church and Château

The Church of Saint Martin was already a parish church in the 14th century. The present church dates from 1739 and has been listed among the national cultural monuments since 3 May 1958. Another historical feature is the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk: the Baroque sculpture depicts the saint standing on a large fish. Luštěnice Château also tells several chapters of its architectural history. It probably originated at the beginning of the 18th century through the renovation of an older fortress and was remodeled into its present form between 1760 and 1774. Today, it is owned by private owners. Numerous archaeological finds already attest to early settlement in the area where Luštěnice is now located. The oldest documents, dating from 1268, also mention Pavel z Luštěnic as the founder of a monastery near Mělník.

Historical Traces into More Recent Times

The former Luštěnice broadcasting station was structurally completed and put into operation in 1976; its operation ended in 1991. It served as the broadcasting workplace of the headquarters of the Central Group of Forces stationed in Milovice. Zelená is the northernmost extension of the former Milovice–Mladá military training area and is located in the vicinity of Luštěnice. Thus, both older cultural history and more recent historical developments form part of the character of the town.

Cycling, Playgrounds and Model Cars

The entire area around Luštěnice is suitable for recreational cycling because of its relatively undemanding terrain. Families will find children's playgrounds by the football pitch, in the swimming pool complex and in the housing estate on Nová Street. In the Zelená district, there is also a workout area with fitness equipment next to the allotment garden colony. A special leisure destination is the Slot Racing Club Luštěnice. It has two tracks for model cars and is also the largest model car center in the Czech Republic. This complements the historical sights with a clearly defined experience that can be planned independently of a cultural tour.
