Kadlín – Views, Village History and Regional Discoveries

Kadlín offers two special ways to experience a stay: views across the landscape from Hradišť and direct insights into the history of the village. The observation tower, educational trail and several exhibitions make Kadlín interesting for travellers who want to combine landscapes, regional traditions and culture.

Hradišť: Views and Information about the Landscape

The Hradišť observation tower stands on a hill above Kadlín and has a covered viewing platform 15 metres above the ground. From there, you can see Bezděz, Ralsko, Ještěd, the Jizera Mountains, the Krkonoše Mountains, Milešovka in the České středohoří, Říp and nearby Vrátenská hora with its observation tower in the Polomené hory. The long-distance view therefore extends from the immediate surroundings to prominent mountains and viewpoints in the wider area. The observation tower combines its elevated location above the village with sweeping views across the landscape.

From Kadlín, wooden signposts marked “Hradišť” point to the Hradišť observation tower; from there, a paved path of less than half a kilometre leads to it. Independently of this, the Hradišť educational trail provides information about plants, mixtures of old Bohemian meadow plants sown along the path, as well as benches with information boards about mammals, insects and birds of the regional landscape. In addition to the viewpoint, visitors can therefore explore engaging topics from nature.

Church and Village History

The Church of St. James the Greater in Kadlín was first mentioned as a parish church as early as 1384. It was originally Gothic and was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1724. The protected church complex of the Church of St. James the Greater includes the bell tower, mortuary chapel, surrounding wall and the land within the enclosed grounds. For a cultural exploration, the long history of the village can be connected here with visible elements of the church complex.

Exhibitions Offering Direct Insights

The exhibition of the rural blacksmith in Kadlín presents the home and workshop of a village blacksmith, with hammers, tongs, a forge and items made using these tools. The exhibition of old agricultural machinery includes, among other things, ploughs, seed drills and threshing machines. Hammers, tongs and the forge belong to the workshop area, while ploughs, seed drills and threshing machines represent agricultural technology.

The exhibition of hoes features a hoe found on Hradišť, a historical museum piece, hoes made in the smithy and a hoe from the 21st century. At the exhibition of regional crops, visitors can hold rye, wheat and barley, rub them between their fingers and smell them, as well as learn about 15 different decimal scales. Kadlín thus complements its historic buildings and landscape-related themes with tangible, immediate exhibition experiences.
