Malý Újezd – Village History and Protected Nature

Malý Újezd combines village history with a landscape where the Pšovka, protected wetlands and paths for cyclists and walkers come together.

Village Square and History

The village square is home to a granary dating from 1840, which the municipality describes as a landmark of Malý Újezd. The neo-Gothic Chapel of the Most Sacred Heart, dating from the early 19th century, also stands there. It was renovated in 2016 and subsequently reconsecrated. A memorial to the victims of the wars stands in front of the chapel. The first documented mention of Malý Újezd dates from 1517.

River Landscape and Protected Areas

The Pšovka River flows through Malý Újezd. The protected natural monument Dolní Pšovka also includes the cadastral territory of Malý Újezd and protects small watercourses, bodies of water and the associated wetlands. The protected areas also differ geographically: Dolní Pšovka includes the cadastral territory of Malý Újezd, while Polabská černava lies partly in the cadastral territory of Jelenice but predominantly in that of Mělnická Vrutice. Near the Pšovka stream, partly in the cadastral territory of Jelenice but predominantly in that of Mělnická Vrutice, lies the important Polabská černava national nature reserve; it was designated as early as 1946. In the nearby area of Jelenice u Mělníka, Polabská černava protects calcareous marshes and seasonally wet meadows. The nearby and very easily accessible Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area also offers numerous opportunities for recreation and sporting activities.

Cycling, Walks and Active Breaks

Cycle route or cycle path 8171 runs from Mělník via Malý Újezd to Jelenice. The path to Vavřineč, lined with a poplar avenue, is used by residents for walks. Rest areas have been built along the path from Jelenice to Vavřineč and in Vavřineč on the way to the forest. These rest areas provide facilities for cyclists, mothers with children and seniors during walks. Along the paths, the rest areas are spread across Jelenice and Vavřineč; at Jelenický plácek, by contrast, the playground, outdoor fitness area and recreation area are grouped together in one fixed location. Jelenický plácek also has a children's playground with an outdoor fitness area and a recreation area. The Vavřineč multifunctional sports field can be reserved. The combination of the cycle route, walking path, rest areas and facilities in Jelenice and Vavřineč offers various options for planning your day.

Transport Connections

Malý Újezd is located on road I/16 between Mělník and Mladá Boleslav. The Lysá nad Labem–Ústí nad Labem railway line runs through the village; a bus connection links Malý Újezd with Mladá Boleslav.
