Jabkenice: Smetana’s legacy and a distinctive local history

Jahody se Smetanou: a route with eight stations

Jahody se Smetanou is a route of the Skryté příběhy outdoor game in Jabkenice. It leads from the village into the forest and follows a path that traces Bedřich Smetana’s usual walk. After a short detour to the entrance of the Jabkenická obora game reserve, the route returns to the village and ends at the Bedřich Smetana Museum. The route is 4.5 km long, includes eight stations, and takes about 1.5 hours. The eight stations divide the walk into clearly identifiable stages. The transition between the village, forest, and museum destination combines physical activity with a specific cultural conclusion. The approximate duration makes it easier to fit the route into a day trip, while the return to the village and the ending at the museum make the course readable as a coherent exploration. The Bedřich Smetana Memorial

The Bedřich Smetana Memorial is located in the Jabkenická myslivna forester’s lodge. Bedřich Smetana, who was deaf, lived there with his family from 1875 to 1884. The exhibition focuses on two rooms with a personal character: Smetana’s study and the family salon. This thematic focus makes the visit a concentrated encounter with the composer’s living environment. Together with the end of the Jahody se Smetanou route at the Bedřich Smetana Museum, it creates a cultural focal point that clearly differs from a general tour of the village.

The church and bell tower as historic landmarks

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is also part of the local history. The early Gothic brick religious building has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. East of the church stands a 15th-century bell tower, one of the oldest preserved bell towers in the Czech Republic. Smetanovy Jabkenice and further discoveries
