Kosmonosy between cultural history and protected nature

Kosmonosy combines historic buildings, museum insights and protected landscapes. Those wishing to combine culture and nature during their stay will find various points of interest here: sacred architecture, castle history, a prehistoric open-air museum and an educational trail through a nature reserve. The different themes thus range from Baroque architecture to near-natural woodland and open-land areas.

Loreto complex and Baroque architecture

The Loreto Chapel in Kosmonosy was built between 1702 and 1708 based on a design by the Italian architect Giovanni Alliprandi. The central Santa Casa of the Loreto complex is surrounded by cloisters and decorated with reliefs depicting the life of Mary, statues of prophets and reproductions of Italian frescoes.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built from 1671 to 1673 and is considered one of the first Baroque churches in the Mladá Boleslav area. Most of the sculptures and decorations were created by the Kosmonosy sculptor Josef Jelínek. Kosmonosy Castle began as a Renaissance fortress commissioned by Adam Krajíř between 1560 and 1570.

Castle, museum and open-air history

Kosmonosy Castle houses a museum on the history of the town, with a particular focus on the 20th century. The castle park was opened to the public after the Second World War. The museum has seasonal opening hours from May to September, on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m.

Next to the castle park lies the Altamira prehistoric open-air museum. It includes replicas of prehistoric structures, including Celtic semi-subterranean houses, a bakery and a weaving workshop, a hay barn, a stable and a small field. From April to October, Altamira is open to the public on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

For planning a visit, the two facilities offer clearly different time slots: The museum in the castle opens on weekend afternoons, while Altamira is accessible on Saturday mornings. Those wishing to combine both highlights can therefore organize their visits according to the day of the week, season and time of day.

Educational history and planned leisure ideas

The grammar school is also part of Kosmonosy’s cultural history. It developed into a cultural center of the region; among others, the Baroque musicians Jiří Benda and Jiří Ignác Linka attended the school. In this way, the history of education adds a musical dimension to the sacred and aristocratic buildings.

In 2019 and 2020, a natural swimming pond was proposed as the centerpiece of the Obora Park leisure complex in Kosmonosy. The planned nature of this element is part of the town’s development outlook and should be distinguished from the existing historical and natural-history attractions.

Architecture and nature in the surrounding area

The Piarist College in Kosmonosy is a four-winged building complex with a central courtyard and covered passageways opening onto arcades. It remains protected as a cultural monument and adds an example of the town’s educational architecture to its historic attractions.

The Baba Nature Reserve is located in the vicinity of Kosmonosy. It covers approximately 122 hectares and consists mainly of deciduous forest, with oak-hornbeam forests and beech forests. The approximate area and the different forest types give the site a clear landscape focus.

The Vrch Baba Nature Reserve protects a complex of near-natural woodland and open-land ecosystems as well as exposed basalt dikes. The educational trail through Vrch Baba begins and ends in the town center of Kosmonosy-Horní Stakory. This means that the trail’s starting and ending point is clearly anchored in the town, while the route connects the protected landscape areas and geological features.
