Dolany – Vltava, History and Active Excursions

Dolany combines the Vltava with fascinating waterworks history, active pursuits, and small cultural discoveries. The village lies on the left bank of the Vltava, where the rocky Vltava valley ends and a flatter landscape begins towards the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe. This gives Dolany different ways to experience a stay: you can explore historic structures, discover routes on foot or by bicycle, and at the same time experience the character of the river landscape.

The Vltava as a landscape and waterway

In front of the village, at the point where the Vltava divides, there is the Dolany weir with a power station. The Dolany waterworks were built in 1901 as part of the Vltava waterway between Prague and Mělník. Originally, they consisted of a fixed weir and a movable weir with folding weir arms, as well as a lock chamber in a lock canal on the right bank of the Vltava. The Libčice hydroelectric power station uses the hydroelectric potential of the movable Dolany weir.

The operation of the waterways is also part of the local character. At the upper and lower forebays of the Dolánky lock, recreational boats can safely moor at the designated waiting places along the bank while waiting to pass through the lock. For visitors, this creates a vivid connection between landscape, technology, and shipping, without the Vltava appearing merely as a backdrop.

Active days around Dolany

The TJ Sokol Dolany complex includes a football pitch, two tennis courts, and a floodlit multi-purpose artificial-turf field. It is used mainly for small-sided football, tennis, nohejbal, and volleyball. There is also a railway stop as well as cycling and hiking trails in the immediate vicinity. This makes it possible to plan sporting activities and exploring the surrounding area as separate parts of a day.

A dedicated event in the calendar is the “Pochod Josefa Kloučka”. The recurring long-distance and hiking event in Dolany can also be completed by bicycle. Another local tradition is “Dolany v Dolanech”, a recurring gathering of municipalities named Dolany held since 2001. A weekend is dedicated to celebrating and taking part in sports together; in 2025, Dolany nad Vltavou hosted the 22nd edition.

History, a monument, and local features

Dolany Fortress is first mentioned in 1406. In Debrno stands the Chapel of Saint Wenceslas, dating from 1674 and protected as a cultural monument. The historically famous “dolanské švestky”, which originate from Dolany, also add a distinctive local touch. Cultural history, waterworks, and regional traditions are therefore not separate topics here, but shape different aspects of the same place.
