Dobrovítov: Church, Forest and Historical Traces

At the foot of the Železné hory Mountains, Dobrovítov lies amid beautiful, healthy forests. The village combines a church first mentioned in 1350, traces of an original fortress, Jewish local history and the Jánský potok natural monument. Church and Historical Traces

St. Wenceslas Church in Dobrovítov is first mentioned in a church register from 1350, during the reign of Charles IV. Small windows in the church tower are probably interpreted as former loopholes; this suggests that the tower may have had a defensive function. This cautious wording is part of the historical significance: the tower is associated with a possible defensive function, not with a confirmed fortified complex.

East of St. Wenceslas Church, a hill with buried cellars forms part of Dobrovítov’s archaeological cultural heritage. It is considered to be the site of the original fortress.

In Dobrovítov, a former granary was converted into a synagogue where Jews from the surrounding communities gathered for services on Saturdays and holidays. The Jánský potok natural monument lies 1 km southeast of Dobrovítov. The stream runs through a shallow, forested valley and feeds a shallow, partially silted pond there. The minnow population draws attention to the wildlife of the protected waterway.
