Miskovice: Views, Culture and Cycling Routes in the Czech Republic

Miskovice combines gently rolling countryside with remarkable cultural and natural attractions. Scattered woodland characterizes the municipal landscape, which rises from the edge of the Polabí Lowland at 270 metres above sea level to 450 metres at the Vysoká lookout hill. This allows you to choose between panoramic views, traces of history and peaceful discoveries in the landscape during your trip.

Panoramic Views and History on Vysoká

The lookout tower on Vysoká is 38 metres high. Its observation platform is 25 metres above the ground and can be reached by climbing 144 steps. From there, panoramic views extend across the surrounding forests, fields and villages. The wooded summit is also home to the ruins of a hermitage known as the Belvedere, together with the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, dating from 1697. The ruins were entered in the central register of immovable cultural monuments of the Czech Republic in May 1958.

Natural Monuments and Distinctive Landscape Features

The Rybníček u Hořan National Natural Monument is the only natural site in the Czech Republic where the endangered dense-leaved waterweed, Groenlandia densa in Czech, is found. At Rybníček u Hořan, entering the water and picking plants are discouraged; fish farming is prohibited there. Another geological feature is the Miskovice pseudodolines. They lie 0.5 to 1 kilometre north of Miskovice and preserve the last remaining pseudokarst formations in this area.

Discoveries of Cultural History Around Miskovice

Near Bylany, the Feldekův water mill forms part of a complex comprising a mill building, a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, farm buildings, a barn and a stone enclosure wall. Between Bylany and Přítoky lies the spring of Saint Adalbert. It is surrounded by a brick structure with a statue and is fed by a 180-metre-long flooded tunnel. In the past, the spring supplied all 16 fountains in Kutná Hora as well as numerous town houses with water.

About 50 metres north of the road between Mezholezy and Bylany stands a preserved lime kiln. As a technical monument, it is connected with the region's long tradition of limestone quarrying and lime processing. The Neolithic settlement of Bylany is considered an important site of Czech prehistoric archaeology; however, no traces of the prehistoric settlement are visible on the ground today. In Miskovice, the Tvrz has a Renaissance core dating from the late 16th century, and some original Renaissance window surrounds have survived.

Routes for Families and Cyclists

The southern loop of the Stříbrná stezka educational trail is an easy, 9.5-kilometre route suitable for families with children. For longer cycling trips, cycling route CKH7 leads from Miskovice via Na Obci to Škvárovna and follows a green-marked KČT route. It is 33.1 kilometres long, with a possible deviation of ±5 per cent. Between Mezholezy and Miskovice, CKH7 includes a steep descent on a narrow road. The two routes therefore differ clearly in length and character, helping you choose the focus of your outing.
