Skaštice – Village Culture, Plavisko Pond and Living Traditions

Skaštice lies in the fertile plain of the Upper Morava Valley and combines a rural landscape with a remarkably dense concentration of local cultural heritage. On the edge of the village lies Plavisko Pond, with a fishing hut and a recreation area. There are also recurring festivals, religious monuments and a short paved cycle connection to Břest. The church is owned by the municipality of Skaštice.

The local religious heritage within the municipality also includes five stone crosses and a statue of Saint Anne. Another striking detail is House No. 18, with its restored original façade and motifs of Cyril and Methodius. The former school building from 1895 is also part of the village streetscape; it is classified as a cultural monument. It is precisely these diverse elements that make Skaštice interesting for visitors who want to discover regional history during their stay not only through major sights, but also through individual buildings and markers throughout the village.

Traditions by the Pond and in the Village

Annual fishing competitions are held in Skaštice. Plavisko Pond provides an appropriate local setting for them, without this implying a general leisure or bathing facility. Masopust is also held every year. Participants, including members of the Skaštická chasa, dress up as various figures. Led by a bear, they go from house to house. The tradition offers an immediate impression of how strongly community traditions shape the course of the year in the village.

The traditional Josefovský košt is one of the spring events. This competition showcases homemade fruit spirits such as slivovitz and apricot brandy, as well as other, less common homemade alcoholic drinks. Traditionally, the Josefovský košt took place on 6 April in an old inn and attracted both locals and visitors from surrounding villages. Another documented example of the village's event calendar is the traditional burning of witches, which took place at Plavisko Pond on 30 April 2025. The programme included a children's disco, attractions and roasting sausages.

Getting There and the Short Cycle Connection

For understanding the location, the transport situation is a useful factor when choosing a destination: Skaštice lies about 4 km from a major motorway interchange providing connections to the north, south and west. A railway station on an international rail corridor with direct connections to Prague can be reached from Skaštice by car within 10 minutes.

There is also a specific option for a short bike ride. The paved cycle path between Břest and Skaštice is just under 2 km long in total. It was opened with a public group ride. This makes it possible to explore the surroundings over a short distance, without attributing to the area a larger cycling region than the available information supports.
