Žeranovice – Landscape, Hrádek and Castle Heritage

Žeranovice combines a distinctive landscape with clearly recognisable traces of regional history. The village lies in the foothills of the Hostýnské hory on the boundary between Haná, Valašsko and Slovácko. Different landscape and cultural regions therefore meet here – an interesting setting for anyone looking not only for a place to stay, but also for a characterful base from which to make their own discoveries.

Landscape between hills, valleys and streams

Žeranovice lies in a varied landscape that extends partly over a hill and partly through a valley. The Žeranovka stream flows through the village, while the Židelná stream touches Žeranovice on its eastern side. These two waterways are just as much a part of the village’s distinctive character as the alternation between higher and lower-lying areas. Those who like to combine their days with impressions of the landscape will therefore find not a uniform settlement here, but a place with a clearly perceptible topographical structure.

The Hrádek fortified site in the landscape

One particularly vivid point of cultural and historical interest is the Hrádek fortified site. It is a small, well-preserved and clearly recognisable remnant in the terrain of a fortified feudal manor. The core is surrounded by a ditch 20 to 25 metres wide, complemented on the outside by a low rampart. Today, the Hrádek site is accessed via a path leading from the west along the edge of the valley. At this specific location, it is possible to understand how the fortification has survived not only as a historical name, but also in the structure of the terrain.

Church, statues and vanished village scenes

The present-day building of the Church of St Lawrence forms part of the local cultural history. It was ceremonially consecrated on 21 October 1900 and provides a distinct architectural accent in Žeranovice. This picture is complemented by two historic sculptures: the statue of St Joseph was created in 1759, remodelled in 1920 and has been a cultural monument since 3 May 1958. The statue of St Wendelin is a late-Baroque sculpture dated to 1760 and has likewise been a cultural monument since 3 May 1958.

The former windmill near Žeranovice also belongs to the history of the village, although not to its present-day building stock. It stood until 1935 and was demolished because of its considerable deterioration. This difference in time is important for putting things into context: alongside preserved buildings and monuments, there are also memories here of village scenes that no longer exist.

Žeranovice Castle and its present-day function

Žeranovice Castle acquired its present-day Neo-Gothic appearance under the Seilern family. Despite numerous alterations, several original architectural elements have survived, including stone hipped-roof vaults in the basement rooms and part of the original entrance to the former fortress. The building is also used by the municipality today: the castle houses the municipal office, a library, a hall for social events and, on the ground floor, a restaurant.
