Chomýž – Trails, Landscape and Historical Traces

Chomýž between the Rusava Valley and the Hostýnské vrchy

Chomýž lies in the valley of the Rusava stream, below the western slopes of the Hostýnské vrchy. To the east of the village stretch the forests of the Hostýnské vrchy Nature Park. The settlement therefore connects the stream with hillsides and woodland areas; marked trails lead through the village and its surroundings. Historical remains can be found both in the village and at the ruins of Křídlo Castle.

Hiking and cycling with clearly defined routes

Two marked hiking routes with different destinations pass through Chomýž. The blue-marked hiking route leads to the ruins of Křídlo Castle, while a yellow-marked hiking trail runs through the village. In the vicinity of Chomýž, low remnants of the palace and fortification walls have survived at the castle ruins. There are also the foundations of a tower-like gate and a round masonry cistern. The palace was the main building of a castle; at Křídlo, only low remnants of it remain. The ruins therefore include several different structural remains, including wall sections, the outline of a gate and the round cistern.

There are also specific route options for a cycling trip. A signposted local cycling route passes through Chomýž. In addition, regional cycling route 5033 runs through the village. It leads from Kroměříž to Hustopeče nad Bečvou and is 55 kilometres long in total. Kroměříž and Hustopeče nad Bečvou mark the two endpoints of the route described. The figure of 55 kilometres refers to the entire route, not to a single section in Chomýž. This creates a specific difference when choosing a route: the local cycling route is focused on Chomýž, while route 5033 integrates the village into a connection between Kroměříž and Hustopeče nad Bečvou.

Historical remains in the village

Chomýž was first mentioned in writing in 1365. A group of statues of Saint Anne, made in 1742, has been preserved in Chomýž. A stone cross dating from 1762 stands near the northern edge of the village. A monument on the village green commemorates the victims of the First World War. In front of the kindergarten stands a monument to the Zelený kádr partisan group. The cross marks the northern edge of the village, the war memorial stands on the village green, and the partisan memorial is in front of the kindergarten. These historical remains are distributed across several prominent locations: in the village, at the northern edge, on the village green and in front of the kindergarten. The group of statues from 1742 and the cross from 1762 both date from the 18th century, while the first written mention from 1365 is considerably earlier.
