Pačlavice: Castle History, Church Art and Cycling Route

Pačlavice Castle: History and Stair Hall
In the 19th century, the so-called Špitálka was established at Pačlavice Castle, as a home for elderly and sick people. A children’s shelter and a girls’ school were added later. These uses are part of the castle’s history, not a current service for travelers.
The stair hall also has a distinctive architectural feature. It contains a large staircase with a wrought-iron railing, and frescoes depicting the four seasons. The metalwork and seasonal wall paintings give the room a clearly defined theme. If you would like to see the stair hall, check current visiting arrangements before setting out. The description of the interior is not a promise that it is open to visitors.
Ota Kříž and the historic sites
Ota Kříž (1845–1874) was born in Pačlavice. A polar explorer and naval officer, he took part in an Austrian expedition to the North Pole and kept a diary. A monument in Pačlavice commemorates him. His biography connects his birthplace with an expedition to the far north, adding a different dimension to the history of the castle.
The Church of St. Martin dates from 1655. Beside it stand a Baroque chapel from the late 18th century and a sculpture group of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Pačlavice also has two statues, one of which depicts St. John of Nepomuk.
Wooded slopes and cycling
Wooded slopes rise to the south of Pačlavice. The Pačlavický potok stream flows through Lhota and Pačlavice. The Pačlavický Circuit is the specific cycling option described here. In the 2026 cycling network, it is more suitable for mountain bikes and runs mainly along field paths and through forests south of Pačlavice. When planning the ride, bike type and trail conditions are therefore central, while the stream and slopes characterize the landscape.
