History and local traditions

Mrlínek was first mentioned in 1301 and was formerly called Mrlín. Local folklore includes the legend “How They Greased the Earth’s Axis in Mrlínek.” The story is recorded in a local chronicle that has been kept since 1927. Its motif also lives on in the “For the Earth’s Axis Cup” football tournament, which is described as a traditional event in Mrlínek.

Two specific monuments offer further insights into the town’s history. The stone wayside cross Kříž naproti žalovu near Mrlínek was erected in 1897 by the local married couple František and Petronela Vávrovi. The local cemetery was established in 1938 on a hill, about 250 metres from the town’s last houses.

Sports venues with different focuses

The Lukostřelecké cvičiště is managed by the Mrlínek Archers’ Club. It has ten targets for archery at distances of 25 to 100 metres. The venue is therefore clearly designed for different shooting distances and differs from the town’s other sports facilities.

The Kynologické cvičiště is located at the entrance to the town. It has facilities for dog training as well as a clubhouse for 30 people. The Fotbalový stadion is situated in the Pod Duby natural area and has a stand for 100 spectators. Those interested in several sports can also use the Tenisové a volejbalové hřiště, with two asphalt tennis or volleyball courts. Use can be arranged with the local tennis section. The facilities therefore accommodate various forms of active recreation: archery, dog training, football, and tennis or volleyball.

Pond, forest and event venues

Obecní rybník pond lies in front of the entrance to Bažantnice Forest, on a path that continues to Bystřice. The pond helps retain water in the landscape and is also a habitat for birds. Those who want to take landscape features and nature observation into account when choosing places to visit will find a specific location here beyond the purely sporting and event-related attractions.

The Pod Duby complex is located in a natural amphitheatre. The site includes a dance floor and shelters for musical performances. Another established tradition is “Pytlácká noc”, organised every year by the local hunting association in Mrlínek. The programme includes a dance evening, a raffle and refreshments. Together with the football tournament, this creates an event calendar that brings local associations and traditional themes into view.
