Boršov – Quarry History, Outdoor Swimming Pool and Cycling Route

Stone as a defining part of Boršov’s history

The quarrying tradition in Boršov dates back to the first half of the 19th century. The extraction and processing of stone significantly changed the character of the town: Boršov had previously been a completely agricultural village. Stone also became a livelihood for many local families. This development makes the quarries more than just a single historical detail. They tell the story of how the work and character of the town changed over several generations.

An important name in this history is Jan Cingroš. In 1892, he opened a quarry in Boršov. The main products of his business included machine-cut and polished granite building components. The town’s history therefore also represents the processing of the material, not just its extraction. Jan Cingroš also supplied so-called Viennese paving stones to the Austrian court – a specific detail that illustrates the importance of his business at the time.

The Pech Quarry was the second quarry in Boršov. It was established in the rock next to the Cingroš Quarry. After the First World War, František Pech reopened the Pech Quarry. The opening of the quarry by Jan Cingroš in 1892 and its reopening by František Pech after the First World War thus represent two different phases in the history of quarrying.

Swimming in summer, skating rink in winter

A completely different facet of Boršov is represented by the large fire reservoir. It has the status of an outdoor swimming pool, and children and adults swim in Boršov’s fire reservoir. In winter, Boršov’s large fire reservoir serves as a skating rink for skating during the cold season.

Boršov lies on the Cyklotrasa 1 cycling loop. It runs through Cejle, Klepák, Mirošov, Boršov, Hojkov and Čeřínek, is 15.8 km long, and takes 1 hour and 20 minutes.
