Telč combines an unchanged historic urban layout with a castle strongly influenced by the Italian Renaissance, underground spaces, and special destinations in the nearby area. During a stay, you can therefore combine culture, walks, views, and cycling without the individual experiences having the same character.

Castle, Gardens and Medieval Townscape

Telč Castle was built in the second half of the 16th century on the site of an earlier Gothic castle as a representative residence. Its original exterior areas have been uniquely preserved and are complemented by historic interiors. The castle grounds also include a French garden and an expansive English park with an orangery.

The historic centre developed within an unchanged urban layout. It is bounded by a defensive system of ponds, moats, walls, and gates. Beneath Zachariáše z Hradce Square and part of the castle grounds lies Telčské podzemí: an accessible 250-metre-long section of interconnected medieval cellars reveals another layer of the town’s history. A multimedia exhibition presents Telč, the surrounding area, and important moments in the town’s development.

Museums and Exhibitions for Different Interests

An exhibition in Telč’s railway depot explores the history of railway transport in the Czech Republic and Austria. On display are historic railway carriages, technical equipment, and other objects related to railway history. The Městská galerie Hasičský dům presents short-term and long-term exhibitions of visual art, photography, sculpture, ceramics, and art objects from museum and gallery collections. Several solo exhibitions are held there each year.

Walks, Ruins and Views

Lipky, an avenue protected as a natural monument, lies in the vicinity of Telč and is used for walks. At the Štamberk castle ruins, parts of the walls, the foundations of several buildings, and a freestanding wall have been preserved; the ruins are freely accessible. The Oslednice viewing tower offers a different view of the surrounding area. From its observation platform at a height of 31.2 metres, Telč, Roštejn Castle, and Mount Javořice are visible.

Cycling Route and Local Orientation

Cycling Route 1113 begins in Telč and leads via Mrákotín to Jindřichův Hradec. It is 44 kilometres long. The late Romanesque Tower of the Holy Spirit, dating from the first half of the 13th century, provides an additional historical accent. It is the oldest surviving architectural monument in the town and is 49 metres high. From the bus and railway station, the route leads to the roundabout; from there, a yellow-marked trail runs 500 metres to the Oslednice viewing tower.
