Jámy combines a place steeped in history with a clear destination for a shared outing: Cesta života begins on the edge of the municipality and leads to the summit of the 663-metre-high Vejdoch. The trail is not only a connection to the mountain, but also an experience with ten stations. This makes it possible to discover Jámy through its landscape, regional history and an unusual themed trail.

Cesta života to the summit of Vejdoch

Each of the ten stations consists of a large stone depicting a principle of life. A QR code leads to an audio recording of a verse at each station. This gives the trail a narrative dimension: the route is divided into individual sections of thought, while the destination remains the summit of Vejdoch. Anyone wishing to combine an outing not only with a viewpoint but also with cultural and symbolic impressions will find a specifically described route here.

At the summit, between two lime trees, stands the three-metre-high sandstone sculpture of a cross named “Strom života”. From Vejdoch, 42 municipalities, 13 church towers, two observation towers and eight transmission masts can be seen.

History and local landmarks

The first written mention of the settlement of Jámy dates from 1252. At that time, Boček and Sibyla transferred the settlement to the newly founded Žďár Monastery. In the land register of 1470, Jámy was described as the monastic settlement with the largest area of fertile soil. By that time, it already comprised 31 predominantly larger agricultural estates. The two dates show different aspects of the place’s history: first, the written classification of the settlement in connection with the monastery, and later, its documented agricultural extent.

The church dedicated to Saint Martin is also part of Jámy’s history. The first records of it date from 1672; it was founded by the monastic authorities. The lime tree na Kříbu also stands in the cadastral area of Jámy. It was designated a memorial tree on 21 September 1995 and is regarded as an old, well-preserved tree of local historical significance, as well as one that plays an important role in shaping the landscape.

Another landmark stands on the road to Žďár nad Sázavou: the municipality of Jámy considers the iron cross there one of the municipality’s most beautiful crosses. The idea conceived in December 2017 envisaged a viewpoint on the 663-metre-high Vejdoch, as well as a cross between the lime trees planted for the 50th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia. This was intended as a gesture of thanks for the past 100 years.
