Velemyšleves – Culture, Nature and Cycling Route
Velemyšleves between culture, nature and cycling routes
Velemyšleves offers several ways to explore the landscape and history. Cycling Route 3034 runs through the village on the Postoloprty–Výškov–Velemyšleves–Chomutov route. With a total length of 27.93 km, it provides a clear point of reference for anyone who wants to plan their journey around a designated cycling route. Another connection is the “Through the Chomutovka River Valley” route, which follows the Chomutovka valley from Velemyšleves to Chomutov. When planning, the specified route length and the valley connection can be considered as two different reference points for cycling trips in Velemyšleves.
Historical traces in the villagescape
Velemyšleves is home to individual architectural and artistic monuments representing different periods. The Neo-Romanesque Chapel of Saint Anthony dates from 1863 and stands on the main road at the northern edge of Velemyšleves. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1746 stands by house number 90. Both sites provide specific points of reference in the village’s history and are clearly distinct from one another: here, the 19th-century chapel; there, the considerably older statue of a saint.
The former chateau complex also tells the story of several construction phases. A fortification from the 14th century was followed on the site by a second fortification from the 16th century and then by a Baroque chateau. The farmyard of the former chateau complex contains a Baroque barn dating from 1736. The former chateau complex lost its main building in 1989. Today, only the farm buildings and park of the former chateau complex are protected as heritage monuments. This chronological sequence makes the site interesting for travellers who want to trace historical development not only through a single building, but through successive traces.
History and protected landscape
North of Velemyšleves, in a former sand pit on the left side of the road towards Most, there is an archaeological site. The Velemyšleves site is the largest researched settlement of the Knovíz culture in Bohemia. Its location and classification as a Bronze Age culture site provide the area with another historical focus, distinct from the later chateau history and ecclesiastical monuments.
A natural area is also located close to the village centre: the northern part of the protected Stráně nad Chomutovkou Natura 2000 site lies about 800 metres southeast of the centre of Velemyšleves. Stráně nad Chomutovkou protects fragments of saline meadows and xerothermic grasslands with rare halophytes. The technical term halophytes refers to plants adapted to saline conditions. In this way, the protected landscape complements the historical themes with a distinctive botanical perspective.
