Baroque Church and Historic Traces
In the centre of Staré Křečany stands the Roman Catholic parish church of Saint John of Nepomuk. The monumental Baroque sacred building was completed in 1741 and has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 3 May 1958. Also noteworthy is the so-called bread vault. According to the municipality’s development planning, only four churches in the Czech Republic have such a vault. A Way of the Cross runs along the surrounding wall of the former cemetery by the church.
In the district of Kopec, you can also encounter smaller reminders of regional history. The wrought-iron Kaufer Cross dates from 1804. Painted tin depictions of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene adorn the cross; the pedestal is made of sandstone. It was restored in 2016. Also in Kopec stands the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, built in 1809, with an altar painting of the Virgin Mary. A column shrine with a statue of Saint Anthony of Padua commemorates the fatal accident of the miller Johann Zimmer in a quarry in 1707.
Half-timbered houses and timber-framed houses have been preserved in all districts of Staré Křečany. Many of these houses date predominantly from the 17th and 18th centuries and are richly clad in slate. In Brtníky, a preserved Way of the Cross leads to the restored chapels of the Holy Trinity and the Holy Sepulchre on Křížový vrch. The surrounding area also preserves memories of wartime: Locals hid in the area during the Thirty Years’ War, the Seven Years’ War of 1756 and the Prussian-Austrian War of 1866.
Rock Formations, National Park and Winter Impressions
Parts of the municipality of Staré Křečany lie on the western edge of České Švýcarsko National Park. A prominent destination is Velký Pruský Tábor, a large rock overhang on the green-marked trail from Brtníky to Kyjovské údolí. Nearby are the remains of the medieval rock castle Brtnický hrádek with a viewpoint, also on the green-marked hiking trail. In winter, the Brtnické ledopády become a special attraction: Several-metre-high ice formations with different shapes and colours form on the rock overhangs.
Kyjovské údolí and the Brtníky area are also of interest to climbers; 472 climbing routes are registered there. To protect rare breeding bird species, climbing in the rear part of Kyjovské údolí and in the valley of the Bílý potok is prohibited from March to June. This seasonal restriction is part of the practical guidance for anyone wishing to combine their stay with climbing routes.
Cycling Along the Mandava
Several cycling routes of varying lengths are available for an active day out. A 27 km tour along the Mandava leads from Brtníky via Staré Křečany, Rumburk, Seifhennersdorf and Varnsdorf to Großschönau. It is suitable for road bikes, gravel bikes and e-bikes. The moderately difficult Route 211 is 34 km long, passes through Staré Křečany and runs through the Šluknovský výběžek; mountain bikes and trekking bikes are recommended.
More compact is the 11 km moderately difficult Route 3032. It starts in Brtníky, a district of Staré Křečany, and leads via Kopec and Kyjovské údolí to Kyjov; mountain bikes and trekking bikes are recommended. At the source of the Mandava, there is a rest area with seating and a small spring along the cycling tour. The Mandava rises west of Staré Křečany at an elevation of 460 m; its source was renovated by the Klub českých turistů.
