Rybniště – Landscape, Water and Trails in the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area

Rybniště combines the landscape of the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area with water, cycling trails and remarkable traces of local history. At 46 hectares, Velký rybník is the largest pond in the Děčín District. At the same time, it is a nature reserve with wetland areas along its banks and protected plants. Thus, a prominent body of water and a protected natural area meet directly in Rybniště – an interesting starting point for a stay combining activity, landscape and quieter discoveries.

Water Landscapes and Trails

An educational trail leads from the cemetery to the dam of Velký rybník, making the pond an easily understood destination within the municipality. In the centre, the preserved dam of a former pond also recalls the historic water landscape. Large linden trees and other mature deciduous trees stand on it; today, the same dam is crossed by a path for cyclists and pedestrians. For exploring on foot or by bicycle, this section therefore combines a connection with nature and local history, without requiring the two themes to be considered separately.

Important regional cycling trails pass through Rybniště and connect to cycling routes in the Bohemian-Saxon Switzerland area. Connections with more distant destinations are also part of the character of the municipality: Thanks to good train and bus connections, Rybniště is considered a starting point for trips to the neighbouring České Švýcarsko National Park and the Lužické hory. Rybniště is also a railway junction on the Bakov–Rumburk and Děčín–Varnsdorf lines. Those looking for accommodation can therefore pay particular attention to whether their stay is intended primarily for trails in nature, excursions by public transport, or a combination of both types of travel.

Activities in Different Seasons

At Školní rybník, recreational fishing is possible every year from April to November after purchasing a fishing permit. In winter, cross-country ski tracks are groomed when there is sufficient snow. These include several local routes and, where appropriate, the Krásná-Lípa loops near Tůň or on Kamenná Horka. The availability of the ski tracks is therefore explicitly dependent on snow conditions. Náves Rybnišťského panáčka also has an inline skating circuit suitable for beginners. For other sporting activities, times can be reserved at the multifunctional sports field in Rybniště.

Churches, Houses and Local History

The cultural heritage of Rybniště includes the Three Kings Chapel in the Na sedle district and the Church of St Joseph. The chapel dates from 1775 and stands near the European watershed. The Church of St Joseph is an Art Nouveau building by Antonín Möller from Varnsdorf, constructed from 1909 to 1911; it is considered the youngest church in the region. Traditional wooden houses with half-timbered upper-floor structures have also been preserved in the municipality, in both single-storey and two-storey forms.

More recent traditions also form part of the municipality’s cultural character. The third Rybnišťský masopust took place on 8 February 2025. The municipality describes the masopust as a traditional festival and intends to continue preserving it. Those wishing to combine experiences in nature with local history can also find the 586-metre-high Široký vrch, also known as Karlova výšina, nearby, with a viewpoint.
