Labská Stráň – Belvedere, Sandstone and History

Belvedere: A Viewpoint with a Historic Setting

Belvedere is located in the municipality of Labská Stráň and offers views from a rocky terrace of the Elbe Canyon, Dolní Žleb, the table mountains Zirkelstein and Kaiserkrone, the rocky ridge of the Schrammsteine and Großer Winterberg. From Labská Stráň, Belvedere can be reached via a red-marked hiking trail. The red markings make orientation easier; several viewing directions open up from the rocky terrace.

Sandstone as Visible Local History

The Comiteebruch and Elbleiten Comitte quarry complex lies in the upper part of the canyon below the terrace with Labská Stráň’s municipal quarries. It illustrates sandstone quarrying in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. Alongside the landscape, you therefore also encounter a tangible history of sandstone use here.

Its location below the terrace connects the quarry complex with the relief of the canyon. This makes it possible to view sandstone quarrying not separately from the landscape in which the municipal quarries are located.

The historic Belvedere complex includes a stepped sandstone terrace with a Sala terrena, a high arcade and the coat of arms of the Clary-Aldringen family. The complex was created during the early Romantic phase of tourism. The settlement of Labská Stráň is believed to have begun during the medieval colonization; the first definite written mention dates from 1614. An archaeological find area contains confirmed or reasonably expected archaeological finds. The historical perspective thus extends from a presumed medieval colonization to a securely dated written record and an archaeologically documented area.

The Markvartice–Růžová–Labská Stráň–Markvartice cycling loop runs through Labská Stráň. The basic loop is 30 km long. The fixed distance also provides a clear framework for planning your day.
