Kámen amid sandstone, forests and hiking trails

Kámen combines a protected landscape with marked trails, distinctive sandstone formations and a history of its own. The entire area of Kámen lies within the Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area. The northwestern part of the municipality has a high proportion of forest. The surrounding forests are characterized by pine trees and complement the rocky landscape with extensive wooded sections. The combination of sandstone and pine forest shapes not only the rocks themselves but also the areas between them. Extensive forest areas are just as much a part of the landscape as the distinctive formations.

Hiking trails around the gorge and rocks

Below Kamenský vrch, which reaches an elevation of 432 meters, lie sandstone formations created by erosion. West of Kámen, a green-marked hiking trail leads through a gorge. Sluneční brána is also located west of Kámen; from the area around this rock formation, the green-marked trail continues to a rock amphitheater. Farther along, the route connects to a red-marked trail leading to Růžová vyhlídka. The small rock town, the gorge and the rock amphitheater offer different destinations along the trails. The circular trail can serve as an independent excursion, while the marked connections allow for a longer tour.

A small circular trail also leads through the small rock town. This makes it possible to combine the marked trail sections with a shorter exploration within the rocky landscape. A rock formation in its natural form became the logo of the municipality of Kámen. The motif directly references the sandstone world that characterizes the town and its surroundings.

Local history and craft tradition

Kámen was founded in 1720 as the settlement of Heidenstein near Heinhübl Hill. The earliest cartographic reference to Kámen appears on a map of Bohemia drawn by Johann Christoph Muller in 1720. The documented history of the town therefore reaches back to the same year in which the settlement was founded. The local history of work is also part of the townscape: in the past, the inhabitants of Kámen produced ribbons, trimmings, stockings and scarves on hand looms. The woven goods complement the natural experiences with an insight into a craft-oriented past. Alongside the rocky landscape, the town’s history—connected with Heidenstein, Heinhübl and the weaving tradition—also describes local everyday life beyond the hiking trails.

Kámen’s main traffic route is Class III road 258 57, which connects via Ludvíkovice to the I/13 international road network. Kámen has two bus stops. When planning your journey, you can take into account both the road connection via Ludvíkovice and the two bus stops. This allows you to consider different priorities side by side when planning your trip: the sandstone formations and marked trails, the small circular trail through the rock town, the pine-dominated forests, and the town’s founding history and weaving tradition.
