Šluknov – Culture, Trails and Castle Park

Šluknov combines a signposted network of trails with religious buildings, Baroque details and a distinctive castle history. Those wishing to combine activity and culture in one stay will find several clearly distinct reasons to visit: hiking trails for active days, viewpoints and urban history for exploration, as well as a Stations of the Cross route and a religious trail with a special character.

63 kilometres of trails around Šluknov

The Šluknovské stezky form a network of 63 km of signposted local hiking trails. They are primarily intended for hiking. Most routes can also be ridden by mountain bike. This makes it possible to explore the surrounding area in different ways without losing sight of the network’s main focus: hiking takes centre stage, while many routes also offer an opportunity for cycling tours.

Stations of the Cross, viewpoint and townscape

One of the most prominent cultural and historical sites is the Šluknov Stations of the Cross. It was created between 1738 and 1756 and comprises 14 stations, 12 niche chapels and two masonry chapels. The route ends at the top of the hill at the Calvary Chapel. The Křížový vrch complex belongs to Šluknov’s urban heritage conservation zone; the structures of the Stations of the Cross are protected monuments. This site therefore combines religious significance with a clearly preserved historical architectural ensemble.

On the northern edge of the town lies the Židovský vrch viewpoint on the 373 m-high Židovský vrch hill. From there, visitors have a direct view of the town’s buildings, the Šluknov heritage conservation zone and the town’s monuments. The viewpoint offers tourist and cycling maps, tourist cards and badges, various brochures, publications and souvenirs. For orientation on site, this location is therefore both a viewpoint and a source of information materials.

Baroque Traces and Sacred Discoveries

The single-nave Baroque Church of St Wenceslas in Šluknov was built on the site of a 12th-century chapel and contains High Baroque statues. Numerous Baroque sandstone statues can also be seen in the town and along the access roads. Another historical trace leads to the Schweidrich silver mine near Šluknov, which was first mentioned in reports dating back to the 15th century.

On the Stezka sakrálními památkami, visitors to Šluknov encounter crosses, chapels, sandstone statues and half-timbered Upper Lusatian houses. The route complements the Stations of the Cross with further forms of religious and regional architectural heritage. It makes clear that sacred monuments in Šluknov are not limited to a single site.

Šluknov Castle and an Annual Highlight

Šluknov Castle was built by Arnošt ze Šlejnic between 1566 and 1573. It is surrounded by a reconstructed English-style park. Every year on the last weekend in June, the Zámecké slavnosti take place at Šluknov Castle and in the castle park.
