Discover Český Jiřetín: Church, Canal and Reservoir

Český Jiřetín demonstrates on several levels what a journey through the Czech border region can offer: a relocated wooden church, a historic water canal, the Fláje Reservoir and paths that lead across to the German side. Church and Technical History

The wooden Church of St John the Baptist was moved from Fláje to Český Jiřetín in 1969. Since its reconsecration in 1996, services have only occasionally been held in the church. The Fláje–Clausnitz water canal adds to this historical focus. It is the oldest technical monument of its kind in Bohemia and served its purpose for 243 years. The Water Landscape Around Český Jiřetín

The Fláje Reservoir is located in the vicinity of Český Jiřetín. Its dam is freely accessible. The artificial Jiřetínský Waterfall channels water from the Fláje water canal into the Flájský Stream. At the waterfall, a difference in elevation of approximately 60 metres is overcome. The reservoir, canal and waterfall represent different interventions in the course of the water and give the landscape a distinct technical character.

Educational Trail and Circular Route

The Flájský kanál educational trail begins in the vicinity of Český Jiřetín, near the dam of the Fláje Reservoir. It follows the canal bed to the state border and continues on the German side to Clausnitz. The Po nové Hřebenovce circular route can be started and finished either in Český Jiřetín or at the Fláje Reservoir. If you begin in Český Jiřetín, the red-marked route leads to the dam. On the return journey from Fláje to Český Jiřetín, the route follows the green markings; this is where the Flájský kanál educational trail begins. The two possible starting points help you plan the tour according to your preferred orientation, without requiring a fixed direction. In this way, the circular route connects the village area, dam and border region, while the markings accompany the change between the outward and return journeys.

For winter days, the Český Jiřetín ski area offers four downhill runs. There is also a natural toboggan run. This seasonal aspect complements the cultural, historical and water-engineering attractions of the church, canal, reservoir and waterfall.
