Valchov – Hiking, Cycling and Local History

Valchov lies on the edge of the Drahanská vrchovina and combines a hilly, predominantly wooded landscape with marked hiking trails, Cycle Route No. 5227 and notable traces of local history. The significant Valchovka watercourse flows through Valchov. Cultivated fields and meadows are also part of the landscape. The area therefore offers various starting points for a trip: you can explore nature trails, follow a longer route by bicycle or learn about the historical features of the place.

Hilly landscape and trails through Valchov

The landscape around Valchov is not defined by a single feature. Forests, fields and meadows alternate, while the Valchovka, a significant watercourse, flows through the area. Those who value accommodation in surroundings offering several directions for excursions will therefore find here a clearly distinguishable combination of landscape and route connections.

There are several marked routes for hiking. A red-marked hiking trail runs through Valchov, connecting the town with Boskovice and Žďárná. A yellow-marked hiking trail begins in the centre of Valchov and leads to Sloup and the Sloupsko-Šošůvské Caves.

There is also a specific cycling connection through Valchov: Cycle Route No. 5227 connects Boskovice, Hrádkov, Valchov, Velenov, Suchý, Skalky, Benešov and Pavlov. The hiking and cycling information makes the area particularly interesting for travellers who do not want to structure their days exclusively around a single excursion destination.

Chapel, mill and traces of earlier work

One of the notable cultural features is the Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul. It was consecrated on 29 June 2003. The design of the gable wall was created by woodcarver Ivo Krajíček. This combines a precisely dated event with a named contribution to the design of the building.

Another historical feature is the former mill with its millpond. It is considered a folk architecture building and has a preserved exterior appearance. Its historical status is essential: it is a former mill, not a description of a mill operating today. A manorial saltpetre works was also located near a mill. West of Valchov, the remains of a saltpetre works lie near a forester's lodge. These references make the local history visible even where the landscape and trails are now the main focus.

Iron ore was mined in the area around Valchov. Together with the information about mills and saltpetre works, this points to various earlier forms of local work and land use. Those who seek historical connections in addition to hiking or cycling can therefore discover Valchov through several specific themes without separating the landscape from the history of the place.
