Sumna between Podyjí National Park and Castle Ruins

Forests, Trails and Connections

Šumná is located at a road junction connecting Vranovská Ves with Lesná and Znojmo, as well as with Vranov nad Dyjí and Bítov. Cycle route No. 5007 Jaroslavice–Znojmo–Uherčice also passes through the village. The cycle route thus complements the footpath to Šimberk Castle and a church visit by prior arrangement with another way to discover Šumná. This allows you to choose the location according to your preferred focus: you can explore the surrounding area by bike or use Šumná as a starting point for other destinations in the landscape, without missing the village’s cultural attractions.

Castle Ruins with a History

You can reach the ruins of Šimberk Castle from Šumná on foot in less than an hour. Another historical stop is the nearby ruins of Šenkenberk Castle. The castle was probably founded at the beginning of the 13th century and was first mentioned in a document issued by King John of Luxembourg in 1325. Remains of the surrounding walls and ramparts have survived. The ruins are freely accessible and have been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. During your stay, you will therefore encounter not just a date, but also visible traces of medieval fortification.

Kostel Svatého Ducha in Šumná

A distinctive cultural feature of the village is the Kostel Svatého Ducha church. It was designed by Brno architect Marek Štěpán and received the Club for Old Prague’s award in 2010. Outside worship services, it can be visited by prior arrangement with a short guided tour. The church has space for 100 people, including 50 seats. For your planning, this also makes the special visiting arrangement clear: seeing the interior cannot simply be equated with regular visiting hours, but is subject to prior arrangement and a short guided tour.

Local History and Another Landscape Feature

Šumná was founded in 1798 on cleared forest land. The Vlkov pond, also known as Šimperák, is another local landmark. Together with its location by the national park and access to the Vranovsko recreational area, this creates a destination where nature experiences, local history and historical discoveries are closely intertwined.
