River landscape along the Dyje

Podhradí nad Dyjí lies on the Dyje. Here, the river flows through a broad valley beneath steep rocks and continues towards the Vranovská přehrada reservoir. The valley, rock faces and water define the geographical setting of the place. The spatial character arises from the interplay of the watercourse and the slopes: the Dyje runs through the valley, while the steep rocks accompany the river.

Podhradské skály and protected nature

Northwest of Podhradí nad Dyjí, the Podhradské skály Nature Reserve lies on the left bank of the Dyje. It comprises vertical, sun-exposed rock faces and steep slopes above the river. Important plant communities are also part of the protected area.

Frejštejn: History in the Landscape

The Frejštejn Castle Ruins are well-preserved castle ruins. They were founded in the middle of the 13th century and fell into ruin in the second half of the 15th century. This chronological contrast is particularly important for their historical classification: the site points to a medieval foundation and, at the same time, to a later change in its character into a ruin.

Art and Cycling Route

A station of Kristkova podyjská glyptotéka is located in Podhradí nad Dyjí. The glyptotheque consists of 11 sculptures by Lubo Kristek, created in the 1990s. The 11 sculptures thus add a later chronological accent alongside the medieval castle ruins: they were created in the 1990s, while Frejštejn was founded in the middle of the 13th century. In this way, natural surroundings, medieval history and later art meet in Podhradí nad Dyjí.

A marked Czech-Austrian cross-border cycling route also passes through Podhradí nad Dyjí. A specific date should be noted for the period from September 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027: the bridge over the Dyje will be closed for reconstruction. If your planned route involves this bridge, you should take this notice into account when planning the timing of your trip. The closure concerns the bridge over the Dyje and therefore depends on the specific route of your journey.
