Nikolčice between basin landscape and village traditions

Nikolčice is a destination for anyone who would like to combine a journey through landscapes and history with vibrant local customs. The village brings together a clearly distinctive landscape on the edge of the Ždánický les, churches from different eras and events in which wine, music, dancing and sporting encounters play a role. This allows you to plan your stay around peaceful nature observations, cultural discoveries or a date in the traditional festival calendar.

Landscape along the Nikolčický potok

Nikolčice lies in a basin open to the north along the Nikolčický potok. The stream rises to the south above the municipality and flows into the Cézava near Židlochovice. This precise location defines the landscape surrounding the village: the basin opens to the north, while the watercourse originates to the south. On the edge of the Ždánický les, the landscape is varied and rich in rare steppe and woodland flora. This creates a destination where different landscape forms are closely connected with the history of the village. Those travelling with children can give varying weight to historical themes and nature observations when planning their own day, without Nikolčice having to be limited to just one type of experience.

Two churches, two historical accents

An important cultural landmark is the parish church of St James the Elder. It was built in 1777 on the site of an older, dilapidated church. The parish church is also associated with a pilgrimage on 25 July. This date provides a specific reference point in the church year and makes the church interesting for travellers who want to view local traditions in the context of their history.

The Evangelical church in Nikolčice offers a different historical accent. It was built in 1862 and remodelled in a modern style in 1952. Together, the two churches illustrate different periods of construction and use. Wine, maypole and music throughout the year

During Ostatky, Nikolčice hosts an annual wine exhibition with tasting. It is organised together with the Nikolčice Allotment Gardeners’ Association. The event therefore combines an exhibition with a tasting and a local event setting. Jakubské hody follows at the end of July. It includes the raising of a maypole. During Jakubské hody, music and singing can be heard in the village; participants in Nikolčice festive costumes dance beneath the maypole. These two events have different focuses: Ostatky represents the connection with wine and tasting, while Jakubské hody represents music, dancing and visible festival traditions.

A sporting side of the municipality

The Nikolčické hry add a traditional school sports event to the cultural programme. Three to five Czech and Slovak schools take part. The event lasts two days and includes football, handball and athletics competitions.

The stone penitential cross U Josífka is known as Nikolčický kříž and commemorates an event from 1663 during the Turkish incursions into Moravia.
