Lužice: Culture, Water and Trails

Lužice in the Hodonín area combines an engaging local history with experiences by the water, distinctive religious buildings, and trails for hikers and cyclists. Local History and Distinctive Buildings

The “Starý kvartýr” Museum is dedicated to the traditions, history and skills of Lužice’s former and current residents in the Hodonín area. The building itself also bears a historical trace: it is already recorded on a cadastral map from 1827. The museum therefore brings together the history of the house and the history of the village.

The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius received its distinctive artistic decoration in 1932. The academic painter Köhler decorated it with paintings of the church’s patrons, Cyril and Methodius, as well as Saint Martin and Saint Wenceslas. Concerts of classical music are also held in the local church. The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary adds another historical accent: It was built in 1825 on the site of an earlier, dilapidated chapel and moved to its present location on Ploštiny Street in autumn 2009. In its surroundings stand sculptures of Nativity scenes, created by students of art colleges under the direction of curator and academic sculptor Lída Pecková during the “Dřevo, kámen – Lužice” symposia in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

Cihelna, the Arboretum and Lužák

The Cihelna grounds are a recreational and leisure area for the wider surrounding region. They are suitable for fishing; during the summer months, cultural events are also held there under the name “Lužické léto”. This allows a stay in Lužice to be combined with nature, leisure and culture according to your interests, without reducing these offerings to the same experience.

In the garden of the Včelařské Arboretum, a bee educational trail leads to trees and shrubs preferred by bees. The arboretum is maintained as a model natural garden according to the selection criteria of the Veronica Ecological Institute. For an outing by the water, the Podluží cycle path leads to Lužák, where swimming in natural bodies of water is possible.

Hiking and Cycling Connections

From Lužice railway station, a blue-marked hiking trail leads to the Slavic hillfort of Mikulčice. The trail thus provides a specific destination for anyone wishing to combine their stay with a hike. Cyclists can use the Hodonín–Lužice cycle path as another connection; it ends on Březová Street in Lužice. Together with the Podluží cycle path, this provides various starting points for planning a day, depending on whether you set out from the railway station, travel to Lužice by bicycle, or choose Lužák as your destination.
