Svatá Maří

Church and historical traces

The landmark of Svatá Maří is the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene. It dates from 1352 and gives the town a clear historical connection. A Gothic baptismal font has also been preserved in Svatá Maří, with four coats of arms carved into it: the coat of arms of the Budkovský family of Budkov, the two keys of the Nebřehovský family, as well as a rose and a carp as symbols of the lords of Čestice. These details make the church interior particularly interesting if, during your stay, you would like to learn not only about the landscape but also about regional history.

Rocks, elevations and views

The Skalka natural monument is located on the road between Svatá Maří and Šumavské Hoštice. It is a 0.57-hectare rock outcrop. The protected feature there is a rock outcrop of vein granite with tourmaline suns. This means that, alongside the mountain panorama, a geological feature takes center stage—one that clearly differs from a mere viewpoint. The rock outcrop adds a distinct geological attraction to the mountain panorama. Its location by the road also gives the natural monument a clear connection to the surrounding area.

From Svatá Maří, there is a view of Boubín, one of the highest peaks in the Bohemian Forest. Boubín is 8 kilometers away as the crow flies. The Opolenec area is also part of the landscape. It protects calcareous or base-rich rocky grasslands, extensively mown lowland meadows extending to the foothills, chasmophytic vegetation on calcareous rocky slopes, forest-steppe pine forests and the Bohemian gentian. Protected features also include caves that are not accessible to the public.

Hike to Mařský vrch

A 10.5-kilometer hiking route to the Mařský vrch lookout tower, taking approximately four hours, begins in Svatá Máří u Vimperka. The route has an elevation gain of 340 meters and a medium level of difficulty. This allows you to assess your hiking plans using clear key figures instead of viewing the lookout tower merely as an individual destination.

The Mařský vrch lookout tower is 12 meters high. Directly adjoining it is the Chapel of Saint Wenceslas, designed as a Romanesque rotunda. The lookout tower and chapel thus form a shared destination for the hike. Two different impressions come together at the destination: the view from the 12-meter-high tower and the immediately adjoining Romanesque rotunda. For planning the day, the route length, approximate walking time, 340 meters of elevation gain and medium level of difficulty are important reference points.

Svatá Maří is connected to the wider road network via road III/145 21 between Vimperk and Bohumilice. The road runs through the municipality and neighboring settlements.
