Nebahovy: Natural Monument, Local History and Pálení Husa

Nebahovy combines natural surroundings and local history with an event example that involves families and children. The protected Pod Vyhlídkou Natural Monument is located in the cadastral area of Nebahovy. The mountain snowbell (Soldanella montana) occurs in several hundred specimens in the area. Nature observation, historical traces and the event thus set different accents. Nature observation remains tied to the protected area, while the local history opens up two historical references through Helfenburk Castle and graphite mining. The village combines botanical features with a local history that dates back to the Middle Ages.

Landscape and Natural Monument

Several elevations and regional destinations around Nebahovy complement the nature theme. Mount Libín is located in the vicinity of Nebahovy. Rohanovský vrch and Volovický vrch are located in the surrounding area. The wider regional surroundings also include Mount Vrata and the ancient site of Chlumany. For your planning, these destinations differ mainly in their spatial reach: the natural monument is located in the cadastral area, Libín in the vicinity, two other mountains in the surrounding area, and Vrata and Chlumany in the wider regional surroundings. This allows you to combine nature observation in Nebahovy with exploring the surrounding landscape and regional culture. The mountain snowbell is a specific botanical feature of the area; its several hundred specimens create a clear focus for nature observation.

Local History and Graphite Mining

The first written mention of Nebahovy dates from 1317. After Helfenburk Castle had been founded, Nebahovy was placed under its administration. The local history thus reaches far back in written records and is connected with a specific castle complex. The historical perspective therefore extends from administration after the founding of Helfenburk Castle to the later use of the underground.

Another historical trace is graphite mining in Nebahovy. It ended after water entered the mines. In February 1902, mining was halted at a depth of 20 metres because of poor business and a lack of money. The history of the village thus leads from medieval administration to a later use of the underground, the end of which was determined by specific causes and a fixed date.

Pálení Husa as a Shared Experience

A different picture of Nebahovy is conveyed by the event „Pálení Husa“, described as traditional. It took place in a meadow above the Å tuců lime tree and included a fire as well as an afternoon of games for children. The programme included an obstacle course for children, a maze, face painting for children and air-rifle shooting. Horse rides with horses from Jezdecký klub Jelemek were also offered. This example is particularly vivid for families because movement, play and a shared event setting came together. At the same time, the event should be classified chronologically as a past event.

Public Transport Connection and Further Research

For orientation regarding the municipality, Nebahovy designates line 600 as its most important public transport connection. Other destinations for regional research are Želnava, Žernovice, Zálezly, Lhenice, Zbytiny, Horní Záblatí, Šumavské Hoštice and Radhostice.
