Horní Vltavice

Horní Vltavice combines various travel ideas within a compact thematic area: canoeing on the Teplá Vltava, trails to Boubínský prales, distinctive rock formations near Jilmová skála, winter sports and notable cultural monuments. Depending on whether you are travelling in spring, during the summer months or in the winter season, different experiences take centre stage.

Two Canoeing Sections on the Teplá Vltava

For an active trip, the Teplá Vltava offers two sections described differently. In spring, the river can be navigated by canoe from Borová Lada to Horní Vltavice along a 13 km section rated WW I–II. Those considering a shorter section for the summer months will find a 7 km route between Horní Vltavice and Lenora. This section is also navigable during the summer months and is rated ZW C.

These two details make it clear that planning a river trip can depend on the season, the length of the route and the difficulty rating specified for each section.

Hiking, Forest and Unusual Rock Formations

Tourist trails lead from Horní Vltavice to Boubínský prales. The name represents a distinct natural experience within the travel itinerary, while Jilmová skála adds a geological dimension: periglacial weathering processes have formed frost cliffs, tors and rock walls there. The unusual combination of forest trails and distinctive rock formations gives a stay a different character from a purely river- or winter-sports trip.

There is a walkable tourist trail providing access to Jilmová skála, located more than 250 m from the road. This information clearly describes the access without equating the trail with direct vehicle access. Horní Vltavice also has an information centre, which serves as a local point of contact for orientation.

Ski Resort and Technical Cultural Monuments

The municipal Nad Kovárnou ski resort is located directly in the village. It has three ski lifts and includes a small snow park with natural and artificial obstacles. The snow park provides a distinct focus within the ski resort, while the three ski lifts give a clearer indication of the facility’s size.

Horní Vltavice also offers several specific cultural points of interest. The Church of the Virgin Mary, St Joseph and St John of Nepomuk was created from 1724 onwards by rebuilding an earlier chapel. The bridge over the Vltava in Horní Vltavice was declared a technical cultural monument in 1987. In the wider regional area, sections of the Schwarzenberský plavební kanál have been reconstructed; demonstrations of log floating take place on these sections several times a year. The Schwarzenberský plavební kanál, Kaplický potok and Vchynicko-Tetovský kanál complex is a national cultural monument.
