Bohumilice between the Volyňka Valley and the Šumava Foothills

Bohumilice is located in the Šumava foothills on the right side of the Volyňka Valley. The village combines landscapes, historical traces and trails: Key destinations include the Bohumilická Alley, just under one kilometre long, a 27-kilometre hiking route through Bohumilice and the Sudslavický Circuit, which focuses on local history. This allows you to set different priorities when planning your trip – from a short exploration to a longer hiking stage.

Culture between the castle, church and literature

Zámek Skalice preserves substantial parts of a Renaissance fortress built in 1549. The entire Zámek Skalice castle complex, with its extensive park, is used year-round as an equestrian facility and offers riding lessons. The exhibition at Zámek Skalice currently includes a meteorite replica. Visits are possible by prior telephone appointment; if you include this element in your plans, making an appointment is part of the visiting arrangement.

The Church of the “Most Holy Trinity” dates from the mid-13th century. The archaeological site at the church is located in the cemetery on the eastern edge of Bohumilice. Karel Klostermann provides a literary connection, having written the novel “Strejček z nebe” in Bohumilice.

The village’s history reveals several layers: The church dates from the mid-13th century, Zámek Skalice preserves parts of a Renaissance fortress from 1549, and the Sudslavický Circuit provides information about limestone quarrying, lime production and the historical use of water power.

The Bohumilická Alley

The Bohumilická Alley lines the road from Bohumilice to Bošice. It contains 76 lime trees estimated to be 150 years old. The alley is just under one kilometre long; there is seating for visitors at a viewpoint. Its length and the available seating give this landscape destination a clearly defined character.

Hiking trails with history and nature

A 27 km-long hiking route marked in yellow and blue from Mařský vrch to Stachy passes through Bohumilice. The Sudslavická Trail runs around the Bohumilice v Čechách railway station. The Sudslavický Circuit provides information about the local history of limestone quarrying and lime production, as well as the historical use of a stream’s water power through a cascade of mills and other installations.

The northern section of the “Sudslavický Circuit” trail leads through the Opolenec Nature Reserve and through wooded, rocky terrain in the vicinity of Bohumilice. At the same time, the Sudslavická Trail is currently not fully accessible due to a recent landslide on a staircase. This is important for current planning: The route should not be assumed to be fully walkable.

The landscape also changes between the alley along the road to Bošice and the wooded, rocky terrain of the Opolenec Nature Reserve.
