Roudné – Village History on the Malše

Roudné is a place for anyone who wants to combine village history and a riverside landscape in South Bohemia. This typical high medieval planned settlement lies on the left bank of the Malše and preserves an almost intact settlement and architectural structure. Its history dates back to 1411. A Medieval Village with Baroque Chapels

The medieval center of Roudné consisted of two rows of large farmsteads enclosing the village square. Those traveling with children can more easily understand from such visible layouts how a medieval village was structured, without the need to focus on technical terms.

The cultural focal point is the ensemble of three niche chapels, which is designated as a cultural monument. The three chapels were arranged in Roudné in the 18th century as evidence of religious devotion. At the same time, the chapel ensemble is an important example of high-quality Baroque architecture in South Bohemia. It thus complements the older village structure with a later architectural accent and offers a distinct approach to the region's cultural history.

The Malše and the Historic Riverside Landscape

The surroundings of Roudné also tell of changes to the river. South of Roudné, the Malše formed large meanders before the river was regulated. At that time, it spread into a broad floodplain northwest of the village. Some of the sections of the Malše that were separated at that time have been preserved. The landscape can therefore be viewed not only as a present-day natural area, but also as the result of a history of the river in which former watercourses and later regulation remain visible side by side.

In addition, cycle route No. 1018 provides a way to reach the center of České Budějovice from Roudné. The two connections have different starting and destination points. The history of crossing the Malše includes two different bridges. The former half-timbered bridge over the Malše to Vidov was a cultural monument dating from 1892. The new bridge over the Malše to Vidov received the “Stavba roku 2010” award. The distinction in time is important here: the half-timbered bridge belongs to the history of the village, while the award is associated with the new bridge.
