Nevězice Between History and Landscape

If you are looking for a place where cultural history, the townscape and paths through the landscape come together, Nevězice offers several distinct discoveries. The Celtic oppidum, historic farmsteads and smallholders’ houses, as well as marked hiking and cycling routes, give your trip different focuses without requiring you to limit yourself to just one way of experiencing the area.

The Celtic Oppidum of Nevězice

The Celtic oppidum of Nevězice was founded on a strategically located promontory with an older settlement dating from the Late Bronze Age. It served as an administrative and power centre for a larger region. At the same time, under Section 2 of Czech Act No. 20/1987 Coll. on Cultural Monuments, the oppidum corresponds to the legal concept of a cultural monument. The location on the promontory and the regional function are part of the same history of the site.

The Nevězice oppidum lies on a picturesque promontory above the Orlík Reservoir. The promontory above the reservoir directly connects the historic site with the waterside landscape. On an excursion, landscape and settlement history meet head-on.

Townscape and Regional Tradition

The historic townscape of Nevězice includes a series of farmsteads and smallholders’ houses dating from the mid-18th to the mid-19th century. Most of these historic farmsteads and smallholders’ houses have now been carefully reconstructed. This makes it possible to trace the development of the village not only through individual monuments, but also through its traditional rural buildings. During a walk, the farmsteads and smallholders’ houses stand alongside the oppidum as independent historical testimonies.

The cultural tradition also includes a folk song about the masons of Nevězice. It also appears in K. J. Erben’s collection “České národní písně”. A good reputation and renown are first mentioned in 1444, taking the written history of the village far back. Its inclusion in a collection of Czech folk songs places the local tradition within a broader cultural context.

Hiking and Cycling Around Nevězice

The red hiking trail from Sušice to Příbram passes through Nevězice. Another option is the green Orlík–Zvíkov hiking trail, which follows the historical development of the region. The Celtic oppidum southeast of Nevězice is one of the stops on this green hiking trail. This gives you a connection between the route, the landscape and history, with the oppidum appearing as a specific point of reference. The red trail passes through the village, while the green trail explicitly includes the oppidum as a stop.

Nevězice is also part of a designated cycling route: the “Okolo Orlické přehrady I” cycling route passes through the village. It is 35 km long and is considered a moderately difficult route. You can take its length and rating into account when planning your day and estimating the scope of the cycling trip.
